Vincenzo Dayna was born  on the evening of April 10, 1684, and baptized that same night as Vincentuis Antoninus, in the mother churchparish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the eldest son of Francesca Luvaro and her husband Stefano Dayna. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) The main church in Sciacca is The Basilica of Maria Santissima del Soccorso, and is referred to in the records as Matrice, and is called the mother church.

Church banns were read at the mother church in Sciacca, on January 5th, 6th and 12th of 1716, for Vincenzo to marry Rosa Tavormina. She was born on the morning of July 15, 1697, and baptized that same day as Rosalia Antonia, at St. Michele’s church in Sciacca, the daughter of Calogera Sutera and her husband Francesco Tavormina. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Vincenzo and Rosa married a few days later on January 19th at the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Six mother church baptism records have been found for the children of  Vincenzo and Rosa Dayna as follows — Calogera, named after her maternal grandmother was born on October 22, 1718, and baptized the next day as Calogera Aleria; Stefano, named after his paternal grandfather, was born and baptized as Stephanus Ignatius Azerelius on October 6, 1721; Francesco, named after his maternal grandfather, was born and baptized as Franciscus Xauerius Agustinus on August 28, 1724; Stanislao was born and baptized as Stanislaus Marianus Dominicus on August 4, 1729; ancestor Elisabetta as Alberta Maria; and Nunzia who was born and baptized as Nunzia Josepha Alberta on August 6, 1735.

It is not known when Vincenzo and Rosa died, but when their daughter ancestor Elisabetta was married on October 18, 1756, Rosa was deceased, but Vincenzo, was still alive. For now, this is all that is known about them.

Stefano Dayna was born on December 25, 1650, and baptized the next day as Carolis Stefanus in the St Michele’s church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Vincenzo Dayna and his wife Francesca Nicolosi. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) On July 22nd, 23rd and 25th church banns were read for Stefano to marry Francesca Luvaro. She was born and baptized as Francesca Josepha Antonina on June 1, 1667, also in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Antonino Luvaro and his wife Cunsula Giambruno. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Twenty-eight year-old Stefano and twelve year-old Francesca were married at the mother church in Sciacca on July 30, 1679, five days after the last banns were read. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Because of her young age, it seems they didn’t consummate the marriage until Francesca was about 15 or 16 years old, as no children were born in the first five years of their marriage. Only two mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Stefano and Francesco la Daina as follows — eldest son ancestor Vincenzo, was named after his paternal grandfather; and Antonino, named after his maternal grandfather, was born and baptized as Antoninus Vincentius Marcus on April 24, 1689. Stefano and Francesca were married for no more than 25 years, and probably had many other children. Sometime within that 25 year span, Stefano died.

On September 7th, 8th and 14th of 1704, church banns were read for Francesca to marry widower Vito Corrao. They were married at the Scicca mother church a few days later on September 16th. (Mouse over and click on Francesca and Vito's Latin church marriage record image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) On this record, she is listed as Francesca Luvaro widow of Stefano La Dayna alias dragonello. What this alias stands for is unknown.

Nothing is known about Francesca’s parents, Antonino and Consola, except that he was deceased and she was alive when Francesca married Stefano. It is also not known when Francesca died, but she was alive when her son ancestor Vincenzo was married on January 19, 1716. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about them.

Vincenzo Dayna was born and baptized on the evening of October 13, 1620, in the St. Michele’s church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Brigida Puccio and her husband Nicolò Dayna.  (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) On January 6, 1649, Sciacca notary Carlo Musca issued a marriage contract for Vincenzo to marry the 17 year-old widow Francesca Romeo. Her maiden name was Francesca Nicolosi and she was born and baptized as Francesca Joanna in the St. Michele church parish of Sciacca on March 7, 1631, the daughter of Antonino Nicolosi and his wife Antonia Balistreri. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image middle right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

When Francesca was almost 14 years old, on January 9, 1645, notary Carlo Musca issued a Sciacca notarial marriage contract for her to marry Paolo Romeo. Almost four months later, at the age of 14, church banns were read on April 17th, 18th and 23rd for them to marry. A week later on April 30, 1645, at the St. Michele church in Sciacca she was married to Paolo. (Mouse over and click on Francesca and Paolo's Latin church marriage record image upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) They had one child together, Jacob, who was born on June 12, 1646 and baptized the next day as Jacob Nicoloso. Paolo, who was only 26 years old, died on April 28, 1648, and Francesca was left a 17 year-old widow. The next day his inventory was taken.

A little over eight months later the above mentioned 1649 marriage contract was issued for her to marry Vincenzo. Eleven days later on January 17, 1649, 28 year-old Vincenzo and 17 year-old Francesca were married at the St. Michele church in Sciacca. (Mouse over and click on Vincenzo and Francesca's Latin church marriage record image middle left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Four St. Michele baptism records have been found for the children of Vincenzo and Francesca Dayna as follows — Paolo, who was probably named after Francesca's deceased first husband, as was the custom, was born and baptized as Paolinus Simon Nicolaus on October 28, 1649; ancestor Stefano; Brigida, named after her father’s mother, was born on December 5, 1652, and baptized the next day as Brigitta Caterina; and Brigida Anna, who was born on April 25, 1655, and baptized the next day.

Francesca died and was buried on December 8, 1656, at the Convent of St Maria de Monte Carmelo cemetery. (Mouse over and click on her Latin burial record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Her St. Michele’s burial record states her correct age of 25 years old and lists her as the wife of Vincenzo La Dayna. Vincenzo was left with four young children.

Twenty-six days later, Vincenzo married Aleonora Imbornone on January 3, 1657, at the mother church in Sciacca. They had at least three children together, all baptized at St. Michele’s church as follows — Michele was born and baptized as Michael Philippus on April 21, 1658; Paulo was born and baptized as Paulus Benedictus on the evening of February 6, 1660; and Vito, who was named after his maternal grandfather, was born and baptized as Vitus Geronimus Calogerus on the morning of June 15, 1662.  Ten years later, on July 7, 1672, Aleonora died and was buried in the St Margaritae de Monte Carmelo cemetery. Her mother church burial record states she was 45 years old.

Two months later, on September 11, 1672, Vincenzo enters into another notarial marriage contract to marry the widow Vita Giacone. Church banns for their marriage were read on September 29th, October 2nd and 9th. Fifty-two year-old Vincenzo and Vita were married at the St Michele church on October 23, 1672. She must have been older also, as no baptism records were found for their children.

Vincenzo died and was buried on March 18, 1693, at the Convent of St Maria de Monte Carmelo cemetery. (Mouse over and click on his Latin burial record image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His mother church burial record lists him as Vincenzius La Daina, 62 years old, but he was actually 72 years old when he died. Seven years later, his third wife died at home and was buried in the same cemetery as Vincenzo. Her mother church burial record lists her as Vita wife of the deceased Vincenzius La Dayna, 80 years old. For now, this is all that is known about them.

Nicolò Dayna was baptized on July 3, 1579, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Bartolo Dayna and his wife Lauria Scarpinato.  (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) There is an entry in Pellegrino Mortillaro’s books, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico, for a notarial marriage contract between Nicolò Dayna and Brigida Bucchia. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) It was issued by Sciacca notary Vito Gandolfo on April 19, 1609. Two weeks later there is a St. Michele church marriage record dated May 3, 1609, for Nicolò Dayna and Brigida Puccio.(Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) So it seems these two records are for the same couple. Brigida was baptized on November 18, 1586, in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Dionisio Puccio and his wife Giovanna Vaccaro. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) She is also the younger sister of Francesca Puccio who married Paolo Angelo.

Eight St. Michele baptism records have been found for the children of Nicolò and Brigida Dayna as follows — Gaspare on February 26, 1610; Caterina on October 19, 1611; Blasi on February 3, 1613; Filippo, baptized as Pho on January 10, 1615; Paola, was born on February 22, 1619, and baptized the next day as Paula; ancestor Vincenzo; Francesco was born and baptized on November 16, 1625; and Giovanna, who was born on the evening of June 22, 1628, and baptized the next day as Joanna Francesca.

Nothing is known about Brigida’s parents except her parents, Dionisio and Giovanna, were both deceased when she was married. It is also not known when Nicolò and Brigida died, but they were both alive when their son ancestor Vincenzo was married on January 17, 1649. Unfortunately, at this time, nothing else is known about them.

Antonino Nicolosi was the son of Sigismund Nicolosi. It is not known where or when he was born, but he lived in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy and raised a very large family there. In 1610, on September 8th, 12th, and 19th, church banns were read for Antonino to marry Antonia Balistreri. The day before the last Banns were read, on September 18th, Sciacca notary Bartolomeo Raja filed a notarial marriage contract between Antonino Nicolosi and Antonia Balistreri. Antonia was baptized as Antonella in the St. Michele church parish of Sciacca on June 11, 1589, the daughter of Antonello Balistreri and his wife Giovanna, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Antonino and Antonella were married at the St. Michele church on September 25, 1610. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Eleven St. Michele baptism records have been found for the children of Antonino and Antonia Nicolosi as follows — a daughter whose name is unreadable, but looks like Ajon or Aja on August 7, 1614; Matthew on September 21, 1615; Leonarda on January 9, 1618; Calogera who was born and baptized on May 24, 1620; Pasquale who was born and baptized as Pasquali Joseph on April 16, 1623; Giovanna was baptized as Jo’a on July 16, 1625; Paolo, who was born on June 20, 1626, and baptized the next day as Paulus; Nicolò was born and baptized as Nicholaus on June 12, 1628; ancestor Francesca; Dorothea on January 11, 1634; and Giuseppe, who was baptized as Joseph Dominicus on November 13, 1639.

Nothing is known about Antonino’s father Sigismund, except that he was alive when his son was married in 1610. It is also not known when Antonino and Antonia died. Unfortunately, at this time, nothing else is known about them.

Bartolo Dayna and his wife Lauria Scarpinato’s ancestries are unknown, but they lived in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, and raised a very large family there. In Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Primo, there is an entry for a notarial marriage contract between Bartolomeo Dayna and Clara Scarpinato, dated April 30, 1549. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Being that the names Bartolo and Bartolomeo are used interchangeably, and Clara could be a misread of Lauria, this is probably for our Bartolo and Lauria. Unfortunately, available Sciacca church marriage records do not go back that far.

Thirteen mother church baptism records have been found for their children. Sometimes he is called Bartolo and other times Bartolomeo. Lauria is only listed as the mother on the last three records. The baptism dates for their children are as follows — Jo on September 8, 1550; Giovanna as Joana on May 27, 1551; Blasi on December 19, 1557; Francesca on July 20, 1559; another Giovanna, as Johana on July 2, 1560; Pietro, as Pero Francesco on December 18, 1561; Antonina, as Antonina Joana on December 27, 1562; another Pietro as Peitro Vincenzo on August 21, 1564; Benedicta on March 21, 1566; Giovanni as Jovanni Antonino on October 6, 1567; Michele as Michel Jaco on September 25, 1571; Calogero as Calogiaro Jaro on June 1, 1574; and ancestor Nicolò. It should be noted that a month before Pietro Francesco was baptized, there is a baptism record for an unnamed child baptized on November 12, 1561. Could it be possible that Lauria was carrying twins and one was born prematurely and died? In those days, was it possible for a woman to give birth to one child and go another month until the next was born? Maybe they both were born in November and the unnamed one didn’t make it, but Pietro wasn’t baptized until a month later. They are both listed as infants, so this is very strange!

It is not known when Bartolo and Lauria died, but they were both alive when their son ancestor Nicolò was married on May 3, 1609. Unfortunately, at this time, nothing else is known about them.

~< Back to Chart >~

Dionisio Puccio was baptized as Jo: Dionisio on October 10, 1546, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Giacomo Puccio and his unnamed wife. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

On August 15, 1563, Sciacca notary Nicolò Canina filed a notarial marriage contract between Dionisio who was almost 17 years old and Joannella Vaccaro, who was just over 11 years old. She was baptized as Jo’ella Angilella on June 24, 1552, also in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Tomaso Vaccaro and his unnamed wife. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) This contract is dated the same and is listed just under her father’s second marriage contract in Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Primo. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Even though Sciacca church records are not available for research prior to 1568, it seems like Dionisio and Giovanna didn’t marry soon after the contract date because more than 10 years passed before their first child was born. The contract was probably created so that Tomaso’s daughter would be taken care of when he married for the second time. Dionisio and Giovanna are the parents of two female ancestors.

Seven Sciacca baptism records have been found for the children of Dionisio and Joanna di Puccio, the first five in the mother church records and the last two in the St. Michele church records. Both Dioniso and Giovanna’s given names were spelled many different ways and their surname was often spelled Puchio. The seven records found begin 10 ½ years after the marriage contract date and are as follows — Caterina Beneditta on February 23, 1574; Michele Bastiano on September 29, 1575; Dorotea on January 21, 1578; ancestor Francesca; Silvestro Francesco on June 25, 1584; ancestor Brigida, the first to be baptized in the St. Michele church parish; and Calogero Michele on February 26, 1589, who married Maria Virdiramo on August 30, 1621.

It is clearly documented that Dionisio was deceased when ancestor Brigida was married on May 3, 1609, but a burial record could not be found for him. On her children’s marriage records, although she is mentioned, it is unclear if Giovanna was alive. Usually when the father is deceased and the mother is still alive, she is listed as living. On both Brigida and Calogero’s marriage records they are listed as the deceased Dionsio and Gioanna Puccio, which may mean they were both deceased. For now, this is all that’s known about them.

~<^>~

Antonello Balistreri and his wife Giovanna’s ancestries are unknown, but they lived in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, and raised a family there. Only three Sciacca baptism records have been found for their children, but records available for research don’t go back far enough. The three children are as follows — Calogera, who was baptized as Calogia on September 3, 1584, at the mother church; Caterina was baptized at the St. Michele church on December 10, 1586; and lastly ancestor Antonia.

It is not known when Antonello and Giovanna died, but he was alive on September 25, 1610, when his daughter, ancestor Antonia was married. Unfortunately, at this time, nothing else is known about them.

~< Back to Chart >~

Giacomo Puccio ancestry is unknown, but he did live for a time in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. His surname is also spelled Pucchio and Puchio, but there are just a few records for Giacoma or Jacobo as a given name.

It is not known who, when and where he married as a marriage contract could not be found for him and Sciacca church marriage records don’t go back this far. Only two mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Jac’o Puccio and none list a mother’s name. Giacomo’s children are ancestor Dionisio, who was baptized in 1546 and his sister Vita Laurella, who was baptized on June 10, 1556. Being that 10 years passed between these two children’s baptisms, it is probably that he had other children baptized in the other Sciacca church parishes, but their records don’t go back this far.

In Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Primo, there is an entry for a contract filed by Sciacca notary, Pietro Falco, for his name that is dated August 29, 1555. Translated it reads, “Agreement between Giacomo Puccio and Luna of a Place in Scunchipane . . .” It is not clear who is buying and who is selling, but this contract was filed within ancestor Giacomo’s lifetime. Scunchipani today is a very small district about 4 ½ miles north of the center of Sciacca.

It is not known when or where Giacomo Puccio died, so for now, this is all that is known about him.

~<^>~

Tomaso Vaccaro’s ancestry is unknown, but he lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. A Sciacca marriage contract has not been found for him and his first wife, who was the ancestor. He was probably married sometime before 1543, but church marriage records do not go back this far. What has been found are nine mother church baptism records for the children of Masi Vaccaro with no mother listed as follows — Rosaella was baptized in February of 1543; Gilormo on September 30, 1544; Matteo on January 5, 1546; Calogera Lauria on April 18, 1547; Pellergrino on April 12, 1548; Antonella on July 17, 1551; ancestor Giovanna in 1552; Pietro, whose name is extremely hard to read, was baptized on March 13, 1554; and Franchisrella on August 23, 1559.

Sometime in or prior to 1563, Tomaso’s wife must have died as their is a marriage contract for his name. On August 15, 1563, the same contract date as his daughter ancestor Giovanna, Sciacca notary Nicolò Canina filed a notarial marriage contract for Tomaso Vaccaro and Caterina Galizia. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Caterina was the former Caterina Puccio who was contracted to marry Alfonso Galizia on October 29, 1553. She was most like somehow related to ancestor Giovanna’s husband ancestor Dionisio Puccio.

Tomaso and Caterina had four additional children baptized in the mother church parish of Sciacca, but only their last child, lists her name on the record. The baptism records found are as follows — Filippo was baptized as Phu Juliano on June 25, 1564; Pietro on March 30, 1567; Margaritella on January 16, 1571; and Andrenna on April 5, 1572.

It is not known when Tomaso died, so this is all that is known about him at this time.
