Andrea Ingrao was born about 1610, probably in Sutera, Caltanissetta, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Giacoma Amato and her first husband Francesco Ingrao. His father apparently died when he was very young, so he probably was raised by his step fathers.

On January 12th, February 1st and 3rd of 1629, church banns were read for Andrea to marry Margarita Carratello. She was baptized as Dorotea Margarita on August 9, 1613, in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the daughter of Bartolo Carratello and his wife Beatrice, whose maiden name is unknown. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Andrea, who was about 19 years old married 15 year-old Margarita on February 26, 1629, at the St. Michele church in Sciacca. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Eight Sciacca St. Michele baptism records have been found for the children of Andrea and Margarita Ingrao as follows —Francesco Antonino, named after his paternal grandfather, was born and baptized on April 12, 1631; Epifania Maria was born on January 13, 1635, and baptized the next day; ancestor Giuseppe; Beatrix Dominica, named after her maternal grandmother, was born on March 25, 1639, and baptized the next day; Angela Francesca was born and baptized on January 10, 1646; Michael Felix was born on April 14, 1650, baptized the next day, and married Dominica Modica on June 7, 1671; Gabriel Antonino was born and baptized on April 14, 1652; and Spina Giacoma, who was given a middle name after her paternal grandmother, was born and baptized on April 4, 1655, but died at 16 years old on January 9, 1672.

It is documented that Andrea was deceased on January 10, 1658, when his son ancestor Giuseppe was married for the first time. Andrea wrote his will (Testamento) and it was recorded by Sciacca notary Raffaela Bentivegna on May 13, 1657. (Mouse over and click on his will entry middle left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Seven days later, on May 20, 1657, Andrea was buried in the St. Dominici church cemetery. (Mouse over and click on his burial record lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His St. Vito burial record lists him as, Andreas Ingrao about 45 years old, which puts his birth to about 1612, but he was probably older than that. Margarita lived almost 14 years after her husband died and never remarried. She died and was buried on January 18, 1671, in the same cemetery as her husband. (Mouse over and click on her burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Her St. Michele’s burial record lists her as, Margarita wife of the deceased Andrea Ingrao, about 60 years old, but she was only 57 years old when she died. For now, this is all that’s known about them.

Francesco Ingrao was probably born in Sutera, Caltanissetta, Sicilia, Italy prior to or in 1589, the son of Andrea Ingrao and his wife Paulina, whose surname is unknown. Unfortunately, Sutera records for this time period are not available for research.

On February 7th, 14th and 21st of 1610 church banns were read for Franceasco to marry Giacoma Amato. She was baptized on October 10, 1593, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the daughter of Angela Siragusa and her husband Vincenzo Amato. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Francesco, who was probably in his early 20’s, married 16 year old Jacoba on February 22, 1610, in the Sciacca St. Michele church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) No Sutera or Sciacca baptism records could be found for their children, but it is documented that ancestor Andrea was their child. It is most likely that they lived in Sutera or the surrounding area while they were married. Unfortunately Francesco must have died within a few years after ancestor Andrea was born, as Giacoma was back in Sciacca ready to get remarried.

On September 6th, 8th and 13th of 1615 church banns were read for Jac’a relict of the deceased Franc’co Ingrao to marry Giuseppe Giuffrida. The now almost 22 year-old Giacoma married the much older Giuseppe on September 14, 1615, in the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Three Sciacca baptism records have been found for the children of Joseppi and Jacupa Giuffrida. The first two were baptized in the St. Michele parish and the last child in the mother church parish as follows — Caterina was baptized on April 21, 1617; Accursio Francesco on December 8, 1618; and Pasquale Calogero, who was baptized on April 10, 1621, by the midwife because of imminent danger of death. Less than two years later, Giuseppe died and was buried in the St. Michele cemetery on November 25, 1622. Again Giacoma was left a widow with even more children, so less than 4 years later, she remarried.

On July 12th, 19th and 22nd of 1626, church banns were read for Jacobam relict of the deceased Joseph Juffrida to marry ancestor Bartolo Carratello, as his second wife. He was the father of ancestor Margarita Carratello who married Giacoma’s son Andrea Ingrao (see above bio). The now 32 year old Giacoma married the much older widowed Bartolo on July 26, 1626, in the Sciacca mother church. Six years later, while she was pregnant, her husband died. Five months later, she gave birth a son, Bartolo Vincenzo who was born on August 8, 1633, and baptized the next day. (See ancestor Bartolo’s bio below.)

Giacoma was now only 39 years old and was widowed for a third time, once again with an infant. Sadly, 11 months later her last child, son Bartolo died and was buried on August 6, 1634, in the mother church cemetery. It is not known if she married again or when she died, so for now, this is all that is known about her.

~<^>~

Bartolo Carratello was baptized on November 9, 1580, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Margarita Parrino and her husband Vincenzo Carratello. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) He was the second son named Bartolo, so it is assumed the first one died. See his parents bio for more on this.

On January 27th and February 2nd and 3rd of 1608, church banns were read for 27 year-old Bartolo to marry Margarita Scaracri. A week later on February 11, 1608, they were married at the Sciacca mother church. They had one daughter together, Calogera, who was baptized on January 19, 1609, in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca. Two days later, on the 21st, Margarita died and was buried in the St. Michele church cemetery. Bartolo was left with an infant, so he soon remarried.

Three months later, on April 19th, 20th and 21st of 1609 church banns were read for Bartolo to marry the widow of Francesco Russo, named Beatrice, but her surname is not listed. A marriage contract or church record could not be found in the Sciacca records for Francesco and Beatrice, but a child’s baptism has been found. Vincenza Russo was baptized on November 25, 1605, in the Sciacca St. Michele parish. A burial record for Francesco could not be found, but there is a Testamento (will) entry for his name dated January 22, 1608, which is before Beatrice’s second marriage, so this could be for him. Twenty-eight year-old Bartolo married Beatrice in the St. Michele church on April 27, 1609. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Eight St. Michele baptism records have been found for the children of Bartolo and Beatrice Carratello are as follows —Antonia was baptized as Antona Joanna on December 27, 1609, but died at 5 years old on March 20, 1615; Vincenzo Paulo, named after his paternal grandfather, was baptized on November 23, 1611, but died at 5 years old on July 6, 1617; ancestor Margarita was named after her paternal grandmother; another Antonia was baptized on March 7, 1615; another Vincenzo was baptized as Vincenzo Carlo on September 9, 1616, but died at 9 months old on July 6, 1617; Francesco Augustino was baptized on August 28, 1618; another Vincenzo was born June 30, 1622, and baptized as Vincenzius Joseph the next day; and Leonardo, who was born and baptized on May 26, 1624.

Two years after her last child was born, Beatrice died at home on the evening of April 13, 1626, and was buried in the mother church cemetery the next day. (Mouse over and click on her burial record middle left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Her St. Michele burial record lists her as Beatrice wife of Bartholdi Carratello 50 years old, but she was probably much younger than that. Bartolo was left with young children so he married ancestor Giacoma Amato, who was the mother-in-law of his daughter ancestor Margarita, and they had another child, Bartolo Vincenzo (see Margarita's bio above). (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Five months before his last child was born, Bartolo died at home and was buried in the St. Michele church cemetery on March 3, 1633. (Mouse over and click on his burial record lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His St. Michele burial record lists him as Bartolomea Carratello 48 years old, but he was actually 52 when he died. Almost a year and a half later, his last son, who was named after his deceased father that he never knew, died and was buried at 11 months old. For now, this is all that is known about them.

Andrea Ingrao and his wife Paolina’s ancestries are unknown but they lived and raised a family in Sutera, Caltanissetta, Sicilia, Italy. The records available for Sutera are not consistent, as some years are skipped, so a marriage record for them could not be found. What has been found are four baptism records for Andrea Ingrao and all but the first one lists his wife as Paulina. The four Sutera mother church (see next paragraph) baptism records found for their children are as follows — Augustino was baptized on August 31, 1572; Giuseppe as Joseppi on February 2, 1580; Palma on May 19, 1582; and Maria on July 12, 1584. The records skip from 1584 to 1612, so a baptism record for ancestor Francisco could not be found. Another son was found in the Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy marriage records — Antonino, son of Andria and Paulina Ingrao of the city of Sutera married Leonora Vento in 1611. Apparently both ancestor Francesco and his brother Antonino came to Sciacca, where they met their spouses and married. Andrea and Paolina probably had other children, but these are the only records found.

Sutera is an area of about 13.7 square miles located about 81 miles east of Sciacca. (Mouse over and click on the photo left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Three churches are located in Sutera, but only two have a connection to this family. The mother church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and is called Chiesa Maria Santissima Assunta. The other one is Chiesa Maria Santissima del Monte Carmelo. Wikipedia states, “the area is dominated by a large monolithic rock termed ‘The Mountain of San Paolino’. Upon this mountain sits the bones of the patron saints of the town, St. Paolino and St. Onofrio. . . . Sutera holds the award of ‘bandiere arancioni' from the touring club Italiano. Sutera is currently the only place in Sicily to hold this accolade, which is awarded to touristic areas of excellence.

It is documented that both Andrea and Paolina were alive when their son Antonino was married on October 16, 1611. Being that the Sutera burial records begin in September of 1612, and he is not listed in these records, Andrea probably died sometime in the 11 months after his son Antonino’s marriage and before September of 1612. After her husband’s death Paolina became a tertiary nun. Paolina died and was buried on December 28, 1625. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Her burial record lists her as Sister Paulina of the deceased Andrea Ingrao died in the city about 60 years old and was buried in Church of the Carmine in the city of Sutera, which is probably the Church of Maria SS del Carmelo. Her age listed can not be correct, as it puts her birth to 1565, which is too young to have her first child in 1572. She was probably at least 66 years old when she died. For now, this is all that is known about them.

~<^>~

Vincenzo Amato was baptized on February 2, 1564, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Calogero Amato and his unnamed wife, whose name probably was Francesca.(Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

On May 22, 1584, Sciacca notary Martino Russo filed a notarial marriage contract for Vincenzo to marry Angela Siragusa, but her surname was transcribed as Fagoruso. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) She was baptized as Antonella on February 2, 1570, also in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Pietro Siragusa and his wife Giacoma, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Twenty year-old Vincenzo and 14 year-old Angela were married at the Sciacca mother church on October 28, 1584. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Ten Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Vincenzo and Angela d’Amato as follows — Giovanna was baptized on September 12, 1585; Francesca on September 13, 1587, who probably was named after her paternal grandmother; Petra Angela on June 28, 1590; ancestor Giacoma was named after her maternal grandmother; Calogero, named after his paternal grandfather, was baptized as Calog Ant’nius on July 30, 1595; Antonnno Leonardo was baptized on March 14, 1600; Antonella Brigida on August 6, 1602; Margarita on November 14, 1604; Giuseppe was baptized as Giuseppe Bastiano on January 20, 1608; and another Giovanna, who was baptized as Joanna on February 10, 1610. All of these listed children have Angela listed on their baptism records, but note that there is a 5 year gap between the fifth and sixth child. There is a marriage record for Caterina, daughter of the deceased Vincenzo d’Amato, who may be another child born in that 5 year gap. A baptism record could not be found for her, but her mother church marriage to Calogero Bivono, dated June 29, 1614, supports her being born during that gap.

Seven months after his last child was born Vincenzo died and was buried in the St. Beneficio cemetery on September 12, 1610. (Mouse over and click on his burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His St. Michele burial record just lists his name and where he was buried. Angela was now 40 years old and she was left with several young children. Unfortunately, it is not known if Angela remarried or when she died, so for now, this us all that is known about them.

~< Back to Chart >~

Vincenzo Carratello’s birth date is unknown, but he lived and raised a family in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Bartolo Carratello and his unnamed wife. A Sciacca baptism record could not be found for him and no Sciacca church records or notary contracts can be found for his father. Because there are no Sciacca baptism records that list a father as Bartolo Carratello, it could be assumed he was born elsewhere.

On December 1, 1577, Sciacca notary Stefano Caruso filed a notarial marriage contract between Vincenzo and Margarita Parrino. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) They married two months later on February 9, 1578, in the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record middle left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) There marriage record reads, Vinc’o Caratello of Bartolo with Margarita daughter of Bartolo Parrino. A Sciacca baptism record for her could not be found, but there is one for a Lucretia Margareita, who was baptized in the Sciacca mother church on February 7, 1564, but her father is listed as Bernardo Parrino. (Mouse over and click on her possible Latin baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) This probably is ancestor Margarita, and the priest recording the marriage, just got her father’s name wrong. If so, this would mean that she had just turned 14, when she married. Without other documentation, this is just speculation, but see the last paragraph below for circumstantial reasoning why this may be so.

Ten Sciacca baptism records have been found for the children of Vincenzo and Margarita Carratello. All but ancestor Bartolo’s list the mother’s name. The first three were baptized in the mother church parish and the others in the St. Michele parish. They are as follows — Bartolo Gioseppi, named after his paternal grandfather, was baptized on October 20, 1579, but is presumed to have died as an infant; ancestor Bartolo was born a year later; Calogera Antonella was baptized on August 11, 1583; Battistina was baptized on February 15, 1589, the first in the St. Michele parish; Antonino Calogero was baptized on July 10, 1590, but probably died young; another Antonino was baptized on February 14, 1592, and married the widow Dominica in 1618 ; Lucretia Gesa was baptized on January 22, 1597; Caterina Vita on January 21, 1600; Bernardo Calogero, who may have been named after his maternal grandfather, was baptized on December 22, 1601, and married Maria Longo in 1624; and Leonardo Vito, who was baptized on September 17, 1607.

Two years after her last child was born, Margarita died and was buried in the St. Michele cemetery on January 21, 1609, two weeks short of her 45th birthday. (Mouse over and click on her burial record lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Her very brief St. Michele burial record lists her as, Marg’ta wife of d’ Vito Carratello, which suggests her husband is still alive. It is documented that Vincenzo was deceased on February 17, 1618, when his son Antonino was married. There is a St. Michele burial record for what looks like Vinc Carriatello who was buried in the St. Michele cemetery on August 17, 1614, that probably is for ancestor Vincenzo. (Mouse over and click on his possible burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) The spelling of the surname could be interpreted differently, but this is the best possible burial record for him. Unfortunately a will nor inventory could be found for either spelling of his surname.

Much of this bio includes facts that are suspect, but they are included because there is a good possibility these are correct. For example, her baptism record and her father’s name being Bernardo is based on the facts that she named a daughter Lucretia and a son Bernardo, two not so common names for Sciacca. There are no Sciacca baptism records with a father named Bartolo Parrino while there are several for Bernardo Parrino dating from 1562 to 1566. Unfortunately, Bernardo’s marriage is before Sciacca marriage records are available for research and a contract could not be found for his name. Because of the uncertainty, for now, this line will end with Vincenzo and Margarita.

~< Back to Chart >~

Calogero Amato ancestry is unknown, but he lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. Because there were several Calogero Amato’s living in Sciacca at the same time and because mothers names are not listed on early records, it is impossible to know for certain which one he was. There was a Calogero who married Nunzia Santangelo in 1557, and one that is listed as the son of Vito, all having children at the same time. Because ancestor Calogero’s son, ancestor Vincenzo, named his second daughter Francesca, it is assumed ancestor Calogero was the husband of a woman named Francesca. Unfortunately, a marriage contract or church marriage record could not be found for them.

There are five mother church baptism records, all within a few years of each other, that could be for Calogero and Francesca. The last one has Fran’ca listed as the mother and the second one has his mother listed as Franc’a on his marriage record. The five records found are as follows — ancestor Vincenzo; Polito was baptized as Leonardo Polito on April 26, 1588, and as Polito, married Fana Venezia on April 26, 1588; Costantina was baptized on January 20, 1570; ten months later, Limpia was baptized on November 28, 1570; and Catinella Rosella, who was baptized on January 24, 1572.

It is not known when Calogero and Francesca died, but it is documented that Calogero was deceased when his son, ancestor Vincenzo was married on October 28, 1584. For now, this is all that is known about them.

~<^>~

Pietro Siragusa and his wife Giacoma's ancestries are unknown, but they lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. It should be noted that his surname has also been spelled Saragusa on some records.

Seven mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Pietro Siragusa, but they all are not the children of the same Pietro as none list a mother’s name and two are a month apart. The baptism records found are as follows — Fedirico on June 20, 1556; Vincenzo on October 14, 1561; Antonino on November 15, 1562; Giovanni was baptized as Jonni Vinc’zo on July 8, 1564, and his father is listed as master Pieto Saragisa; the next month Cosimo was baptized on August 20, 1564; Damian Calogero on September 28, 1567, whose father is listed as Petro d’ Jo: Siragusa; and ancestor Angela who was most likely the daughter who was baptized as Antonella. Two facts indicate that there was more than one Pietro having children at this time. First there is the two boys born a month apart. Being that only one record list the father as master, that child is probably not ancestor Pietro’s son. The other fact is that Damiano’s father was listed as Petro, son of Jo, meaning Giovanni. That is usually the way the priest differentiates between two fathers of the same name. So it is not known if ancestor Pietro was the son of Giovanni nor if he was a master of his craft.

It is not known when Pietro and Giacoma died, but they both were alive when ancestor Angela was married on October 28, 1584. Until more documentation can be found, this is all that is known about them.
