Geronimo Modica was baptized as Geronimo Jo on March 26, 1612, in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Filippa Bacchi and her husband Pietro Modica.  (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism image upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

On January 11, 1643, Sciacca notary Carlo Musca, file a notarial marriage contract between Geronimo Modica and Rosaria Liotta, who is also called Rosalia Liotta. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) A few week later on February 2nd, 8th, and 15th church marriage banns were read for them. Almost 31 year-old Hieronimus de Modica and Rosalia de Liotta were married at St. Michael the Archangel church, in Sciacca on the last day that the banns were read, February 15, 1643. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Unfortunately her ancestry is unknown as her parents are not listed on their marriage document.

Only four St. Michele baptism records were found for the children of Hieronimo and Rosalia de Modica as follows — Pietro, named after his paternal grandfather, was born on February 21, 1644, and baptized as Petrus Dominicus Rosarius the next day; Anna, given the middle name of her paternal grandmother Filippa, was born on November 17, 1645, and baptized as Anna Pha the next day; Benedetta Catharina was born on March 21, 1649, and baptized the next day; and ancestor Vito.

A 1652 Sciacca Rivelo (tax record) was found for this family. (Mouse over and click on their Rivelo image lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) On it, Geronimo parents are listed as the deceased Petro and Pha deModica. Geronimo is listed as being 30 years old, but he was actually 40 at that time. His wife Rosalea, and two daughters, ancestor Filippa and Margarita are listed next with no ages. Lastly is Francesca La Liotta, whose relationship is not listed, but may be Rosalea’s sister or mother. A baptism record for Margarita could not be found. According to her position on the Rivelo, she may be Benedetta, and was listed incorrectly as Margarita.

It is documented that Geronimo was deceased, and Rosalia was still alive when their son ancestor Vito was married on November 19, 1673. There is a St. Michele burial record that could be for Geronimo, but his surname is not spelled correctly. (Mouse over and click on his possible burial record image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) It is for a 60 year-old Hieronimus lo Motaco who died and was buried in the St. Maria de Lilo cemetery on January 22, 1663. This is the only burial record in the St. Michele files that could be for him, but it may not be him! It is not known if Rosalia remarried or when she died. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about them.

Pietro Modica was baptized as Petro Franco on May 6, 1591, in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Angela Siragusa and her husband Geronimo Modica. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism image upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

On August 25, 1608, in the Sciacca St. Michel church, 17 year-old Pietro married almost 15 year-old Filippa Bacchi. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage document image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) She was baptized as Filippa Francisca on October 1, 1593, in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Giacoma Maringo and her husband Andria Bacchi. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism image lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Seven Sciacca St. Michele baptism records have been found for the children of Petro and Filippa di Modica as follows — Angela, named after her paternal grandmother, was baptized on February 18, 1610; ancestor Geronimo was named after his paternal grandfather; Andria, named after his maternal grandfather, was baptized on August 22, 1614; Dorotea was baptized on December 29, 1615, but probably died young; Leonardo on September 4, 1618; another Dorothea was born and baptized on March 7, 1621; and Andriana, given the female version of her maternal grandfather’s name, was born and baptized on November 29, 1623. Seven months after their first child, Angela was born, Sciacca notary Antonio Buscemi filed a dowry restitution contract for them on September 13, 1610. This is usually made at the birth of the first child.

It is documented that Pietro and Filippa were both alive when their son Leonardo was married on August 26, 1641, and deceased on May 9, 1652, the date of their son ancestor Geronimo’s tax record. Unfortunately, a burial record could not be found in the St. Michele files for them during this almost 11 year span. For now, nothing else is known about them.

Geronimo Modica’s ancestry is unknown, but he married and raised a family in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. On September 30, 1573, Sciacca notary Antonino Canina file a notarial marriage contract for Geronimo to marry Angela Siragusa. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) She was the daughter of Martino Siragusa, but a baptism record for her could not be found. It should be noted that baptism records before 1586 are not available for research in St. Vito’s or St. Michele’s church records. Geronimo and Angela were married in the Sciacca mother church, The Basilica of Maria Santissima del Soccorso, on October 12, 1573, almost two weeks after the contract was filed. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage document image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Six Sciacca baptism records have been found for the children of Geronimo and Angilella la Modica. Both Geronimo and Angela’s given names were listed several different ways. He was listed as Gilormo, Master Germo, and Jeronimino. She was listed as Angela, Anrella and Angelella. Their first three children were baptized in the mother church parish and the last three in the St. Michele parish as follows — Giuseppe was baptized as Joseppo on March 20, 1577; Cesaro as Cesaro Pho on January 13, 1580; Catinella Maria on September 9, 1581; Desiala on December 2, 1588, the first to be baptized in St. Michele parish; ancestor Pietro; and Antoni Pasquale, who was baptized on April 21, 1596. Being that no children were baptized during the fires 3 ½ years of their marriage may be an indication that Angela was very young when they married.

Nothing is known about Angela’s father Martino, except that he was alive when she was married in October of 1573.

It is documented that Geronimo and possibly Angela were deceased on August 25, 1608, when their son ancestor Pietro was married. So, the St Michele burial record for Ger’omus di Modica, dated August 23, 1607, is most likely for this ancestor. (Mouse over and click on his probable burial record image lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) No other identifying information is on this record. It simply states he was buried in the St. Michele cemetery. A burial record for Angela has not been found yet, so for now, this is all that is known about them.

Andria Bacchi and his wife Giacoma Maringo’s ancestries are unknown, but they lived and raised a family in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. His surname is sometimes listed as Bachi. On all of her church records Giacoma’s given name is listed as Jacoba or Jacobella, which are the Latin translations for the Italian name of Giacoma.

On September 11, 1584, Sciacca notary Martino Russo filed a notarial marriage contract for Andrea and Giacoma. They probably married soon after that date in the Sciacca St Michele church, but that church’s marriage records are not available for research that far back. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Only five Sciacca St Michele baptism records have been found for the children of Andria and Jacoba Bacchi as follows — Paolo was baptized as Palo Barnabo Antino on June 10, 1587; Natali Vincenzo, named after Christmas, was baptized on December 24, 1588; Leonarda Angella on November 17, 1590; ancestor Filippa; and Giuseppe, who was baptized as Joseph Jacinto on November 8, 1595.

It is documented that Andrea was alive, but his wife Giacoma was deceased when their daughter ancestor Filippa was married on August 25, 1608. There is a St. Michele’s burial record for his name, dated March 5, 1613, who was buried in the St. Michele's cemetery. (Mouse over and click on his probable burial record image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Although there is no other identifying information on this record, this is probably ancestor Andria. A burial record for Giacoma could not be found. She probably died before 1606, which is the first year burial records are available for research. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about them.
