Cosmos Santangelo was born in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, on September 27, 1645, and baptized the next day in the mother church parish there as Michael Cosmos, the son of Francesca Maria Quartararo and her husband Angelo Gaspare Santangelo. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His given name has been recorded with different spellings. The Latin name of Cosmo usually is spelled Cosimo in Italian, but Sicilian names are sometimes slightly different. It should be noted that the main church in Sciacca is The Basilica of Maria Santissima del Soccorso, which is referenced as the Matrice in the records, and is considered to be Sciacca’s mother church.

On April 10th, 11th and 12th of 1667 church banns were read for Cosmos to marry Maria Giuseppa diMino. She was born in Sciacca, the morning of March 30, 1653, and baptized in the mother church parish there that same day as Maria Josepha, the daughter of Margarita Chiaramonte and her husband Vito diMino. (Mouse over and click on her baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Maria was a much younger sister to ancestor Leonardo diMino. Twenty-one year-old Cosmos and 14 year-old Maria were married in Sciacca at the St. Vito church on April 18, 1667. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Seven Sciacca baptism records have been found for the children of Cosmo and Maria S.Angelo, the first four in the mother church parish and the last three in the St. Michele parish as follows — Angela Francesca was born on the morning of February 25, 1670, and baptized that same day with the female version of her paternal grandfather’s name; ancestor Angelo was given the name of his paternal grandfather; Giuseppe Vito was born and baptized as Joseph Vitus, on the evening of February 16, 1674,with the middle name of his maternal grandfather; Domenico Benedetto was born on January 5, 1677, and baptized as Dominius Beneditus the next day; Pietro, was born on April 26, 1683, and baptized as Petrus Benedictus Calogerus the next day, the first in the St. Michele parish; Anna Maria Margarita was born on the evening of February 19, 1686, and baptized the next day; and Margarita Calogera was born on the evening of April 26, 1689, and baptized the next day

It is documented that Maria died before her son ancestor Angelo’s marriage on September 2, 1691.Unfortunately, Sciacca burial records are missing after 1674 to the latter part of 1690. She probably died in early 1690 because on October 1st of that year, church banns were first read for her husband to remarry. On October 16, 1690, 45 year-old Cosmos Santangelo relict of deceased Marie married the widow Antoniam Alia at the St. Michele church in Sciacca. No baptism records for children of Cosmo and Antonina have been found. Thirty-nine years after he remarried, Cosmos died and was buried at the convent of St. Francesco’s cemetery on June 24, 1730. His mother church burial record states he was about 78 years old, but he was actually 84 years old. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church burial record image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) At this time, nothing else is known about them.

Angelo Gaspare Santangelo was baptized on May 5, 1611, in the St. Vito church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Vita Bruno and her husband Giuseppe Santangelo. (Mouse over and click on his baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

On October 3, 1632, Sciacca notary Giacomo Lauro filed a notarial marriage contract for Angelo to marry Francesca Maria Quartararo. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) She was also born in Sciacca and baptized in the St Vito’s church parish on September 7, 1611, the daughter of Angela Galluzzo and her husband Vincenzo Quartararo. (Mouse over and click on her baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) She is also the much younger sister to ancestor Vito. Church banns for Angelo and Francesca to marry were read a week after the contract was signed, beginning on October 10th, then 17th, and lastly on the 24th. The next day, October 25, 1632, Angelo and Francesca, both 21 years old, were married at St Vito’s church in Sciacca. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image middle left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Ten Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Angelo and Francesca Santangelo as follows — Vita, named after her paternal grandmother was born and baptized on August 21, 1633, but died at 9 months old on June 15, 1634; another Vita and her twin sister Paola Vincenza were born on the evening of January 23, 1635, and baptized the next day; Giuseppe, named after his paternal grandfather, was born and baptized as Joseph Giovanni on January 18, 1637, but died at 1 month old on February 26, 1637; Paolo was born and baptized as Paulus Joseph on January 14, 1638, and married Catharina Cali on February 5, 1668; Michele was born and baptized as Michael Domincus on October 30, 1640; Antonino was born on the morning of February 21, 1643, baptized that same day as Antonus Francesus, and married Vincenza Galioto in 1671; ancestor Cosmos; Vito was born and baptized as Vitus Calogerus Joseph on April 29, 1649, but died just over 2 months later on July 3, 1649; and another Vito who was born on July 26, 1650, and baptized the next day as Vitus Calogerus.

It is documented that Angelo and Francesca were both alive when their son Antonino was married on April 12, 1671. Francesca died and was buried in the St. Michele church cemetery on December 18, 1690. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Her mother church burial record lists her as, Francisca wife of the deceased Angeli Santangelo, about 70 years old. This means that Angelo died sometime between his son’s marriage in 1671 and his wife’s death in 1690.

Unfortunately, at this time, nothing else is known about them.

~<^>~

Giuseppe Santangelo was baptized as Grigoli Joseph on March 13, 1569, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Gaspare Santangelo and Angela, whose surname unknown. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His given name of Grigoli is usually a surname, and it may be his mother’s surname. On February 2nd, 7th and 14th church banns were read for Giuseppe to marry Vita Bruno. She was also baptized in the mother church parish of Sciacca on June 7, 1590, the daughter of Costantina Mazacca and her husband Calogero Bruno. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church baptism record image middle right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Forty year-old Giuseppe and 19 year-old Vita were married at the St. Michele church in Sciacca on February 21, 1610, a week after the last banns were read. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) There only known child was ancestor Angelo.

It is documented that Giuseppe was deceased when his son ancestor Angelo was married on October 25, 1632. Giuseppe’s Testamento (will) was filed by Sciacca notary Antonio Buscemi on August 30, 1614. He died and was buried in the St. Margarita church cemetery a few weeks later on September 10, 1614. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church burial record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His brief St. Michele burial record simply lists his name, without an age, and burial place, but he was 45 years old when he died. A month later, on October 11, 1614, an inventory of property was taken and filed by the same notary who filed his will. It is not known when Vita died, but on October 14, 1623, she wrote and filed her Testamento with Sciacca notary Giuseppe Cattano. A burial record for her around this time could not be found. Being that she was only 33 years old, it may be that she was about to remarry and wanted to make sure her son, ancestor Angelo, was taken care of before her property would be given to her new husband. Until documentation can be found, this will remain just speculation. There is however, another Testamento for Vita Santangelo dated November 29, 1632, followed by a St. Michele burial record, but her age is way off. It reads, Vita Santangelo 65 years old died at home and was buried in the St. Michele cemetery on December 3, 1632. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)There is no other identifying information on this record, so it isn’t known for sure if this is ancestor Vita, as she would have been 42 years old, not 65 at this time. Although burial record ages are usually an estimate, making her 23 years older is a bit much. But this is the only burial record for her name in this time period. Without further documentation, this is just a good possibility. Unfortunately, at this time, nothing else is known about them.

~< Back to Chart >~

Vincenzo Quartararo was baptized on July 10, 1567, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Bartolo Quartararo and his wife Antonella Geremia. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) He is also the younger half-brother to ancestor Leonardo Quartararo.

On March 18, 1591, Sciacca notary Vincenzo Palermo filed a notarial marriage contract for 23 year-old Vincenzo to marry Angela Galluzzo. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) This contract is documented without details in Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Primo. Angela was baptized as Angellella on June 30, 1578, also in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Cunsula Rosa and her husband Filippo Galluzzo. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church baptism record image middle right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) A church marriage record could not be found for them, but they probably married in the Sciacca St. Vito church, whose records are not available for research for 1591.

Thirteen St. Vito’s baptism records have been found for the children of Vincenzo and Angela Quartararo as follows — Bartolo Pietro on July 18, 1592, was named after his paternal grandfather, and married Beatrice Leo on July 15, 1614; ancestor Vito was born before his twin brother Simon Calogero, and they were baptized on October 16, 1594; Francesco on September 18, 1597; Giuseppe was baptized as Joseppi Antonio on January 21, 1600; Stefano was baptized with a middle name that looks like Nunzio on December 27, 1602; Benvenuta Margarita on January 4, 1604; Salvatore was baptized as Salvatuio Joseppi on April 1, 1606; another set of twins Calogero and Filippo Marco, who was named after his maternal grandfather, were both baptized on April 24, 1609; ancestor Francesca; Anna Margarita was baptized on June 12, 1614; and Maria, who was baptized on December 21, 1615.

A little more than two years after her last child was baptized, Angela died. She was buried in the Carmeli convent cemetery in Sciacca on March 15, 1618. Her St. Vito burial record lists her as Anjila wife of Vinc’zo Quarttararo, no age given. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Almost 4 years later, on December 27th and 31st of 1621 and January 1st of the next year, church banns were read for Vincenzo to marry Joanna Termini. A week later on January 9, 1622, 54 year-old Vincenzo of the St. Vito parish and Joanna were married in the St. Michele church in Sciacca. Only one St. Vito baptism record for the children of Vincenzo and Joanna Quartararo has been found — Gerlandio was born and baptized on February 26, 1624.

It is documented that Vincenzo was alive when his son Vito was married on July 10, 1617, and deceased when his daughter ancestor Francesca was married on October 25, 1632. Vincenzo died at home and was buried in the St. Maria church cemetery on October 16, 1632, just 9 days before his daughter was married. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church burial record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His St. Vito burial record lists him as Vincentius Quartararo, about 60, but he was actually 65 when he died. For now, this is all that is known about them.

~<^>~

Gaspare Santangelo was baptized as Gasparo Cola in September of 1538, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Giovanni Santangelo and his unnamed wife. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church baptism index record image right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Sciacca detailed register records do not begin until 1543, so an exact baptism date is not known. Index records for this time period only list the month and year.

Sometime prior to 1565, he married a woman named Angela, but a Sciacca church marriage record or contract can not be found for them. They lived in the mother church parish of Sciacca and had at least six children baptized there as follows — Vincenzo was baptized as Vinc’o Joseppi on September 24, 1565; Nardulla or Narduzza Francischella on May 1, 1567; ancestor Giuseppe; Geronimo Vincenzo on February 4, 1572, was the first to have his mother’s name listed on the baptism record; Francisca was baptized on June 18, 1573; and Geromino Bastiano, who was baptized on July 21, 1576. They probably had more children prior to the ones listed here, but Sciacca baptism records could not be found for them.

It is documented that Gaspare and Angela were deceased when their son, ancestor Giuseppe was married on February 21, 1610, but when they died is not known. Sciacca burial records do not begin until 1606, and neither of them are listed in all three church records, so they probably died sometime prior to 1606. Unfortunately, at this time, nothing else is known about them.

~< Back to Chart >~

Calogero Bruno was baptized on June 22, 1544, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Augostino Bruno and his unnamed wife. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) All that is known about Calogero’s early life is that he had an older sister and younger brother, both also baptized in the mother church parish. His sister was baptized in January of 1536, but her name is hard to read, something like Roisabetta. His brother was baptized as Antonino Costantino on May 5, 1547.

On January 29, 1576, Sciacca notary Giacomo Janchino filed a notarial marriage contract between 31 year-old Calogero and Costanza Mazacca. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)  Her ancestry is unknown, but she is called Costantina on all of the church records. Calogero and Costantina Mazacca probably married just prior to or soon after the marriage contract was filed.

Only six Sciacca baptism records have been found for the children of Calogero and Costantina Bruno. The first five in the mother church parish and the last in the St. Vito parish as follows — Antonino Vincenzo was baptized on November 12, 1576; Margarita Angila on November 2, 1579; Battisto Bernardo on December 23, 1582; Gregorio on March 12, 1584; ancestor Vita; and Francisco Battista on August 3, 1609, the only one baptized in the St. Vito parish.

It is documented that Calogero and Costantina were alive when their daughter ancestor Vita was married on February 21, 1610. Calogero died and was buried in the St. Margarita church cemetery on June 29, 1611. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church burial record image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His extremely brief St. Michele burial record just lists his name and place of burial. There is an inventory entry in Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Primo, dated September 30, 1613, that may be for this ancestor. There could be several reasons why it took more than 3 years to do this inventory, but without more information it is uncertain if this is for this ancestor. Costantina lived another 4 years and 7 months. She died and was buried in the mother church cemetery on February 7, 1616. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church burial record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Her St. Michele burial record is also very brief and lists her as Costantina Bruno, without an age. For now, this is all that is known about them.

~<^>~

Bartolo Quartararo’s ancestry is uncertain, but he lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. There are two Sciacca mother church baptism index records that could be for him. The first is dated what looks like September of 1530, for a Jo: Bartolo son of Baldassare. The later one is dated November of 1538, for Bartolo son of Jo:, which is short for Giovanni. Unfortunately, there aren’t register records for these dates, so nothing more can be learned.

In volume 1 of Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico, there is a notarial marriage contract entry dated April 21, 1560, between Bartolomeo Quartararo and Antonella Geremia. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) This is probably for ancestor Bartolo, as the date fits with both of the baptism records mentioned above. It could also be a dowry restitution contract, made a few years after their marriage. Unfortunately, Sciacca church marriage records available for research do not go back this far. Antonella was baptized on December 25, 1544, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of the deceased Baldo Geremia and his wife Preziosa Fichilo. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church baptism record image right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Twelve mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Bartolo Quartararo. Seven of the later ones list the mother as Antonella, but the first five, including ancestor Vincenzo’s don’t list a mother’s name. Two were baptized prior to the marriage contract listed above, and are not Antonella’s sons as she would have been only nine years old when the first one was born. Those two are Joannello, baptized on May 19, 1553, whose name is a form of Giovanni and suggests his father Bartolo, was the son of Giovanni; and Nardo Baldasso on April 27, 1555, who may be the father to ancestor Giulia Constantina who married Francesco Santangelo. These sons are probably the children of Bartolo and his first wife or they were born to an entirely different Bartolo. There is a seven year gap between this last child and Bartolo’s next child, who is probably also Antonella’s child, as this child was born two years after Bartolo and Antonella were married. The remaining ten children are as follows — Vita Vincenza was baptized on June 3, 1562, and was the first wife of ancestor Martino Bivona; Mariano on September 8, 1565; ancestor Vincenzo; Giovanni was baptized as Jo Leonardo on May 16, 1570; Giuseppe was baptized as Joseph on April 5, 1572, the first to have his mother’s name on the record; Xurilla on November 19, 1573; Georgio, who was baptized as Georgio Pho on April 24, 1575; Francesca Bastiana on November 18, 1576, who grew up to marry Antonino Santangelo on May 9, 1591; Pietro on February 22, 1580, who married Calogera Abruzzo on January 23, 1600; and Cataudo on December 29, 1581, who married Calogera Santangelo on August 13, 1606.

It is not known when Antonella died, but it is documented that Bartolo was deceased when his daughter Francesca was married on May 9, 1591. Bartolo wrote his will and filed it with Sciacca notary Sigismondo Mandracchia on August 30, 1589. A few months later that same notary filed Bartolo’s property inventory on November 20, 1589. Antonella was only 44 years old and left with several young children, so the following marriage is probably for her. In Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book mentioned above, there is an entry for a notarial marriage contract between Nicolò Monaco and Antonella Geremia dated October 2, 1589. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) A church marriage record or baptism records for children born to this couple, could not be found in the Sciacca church records. He may be ancestor Nicolò who married Margarita and father of ancestor Olimpia. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about them.

~< Back to Chart >~

Filippo Galluzzo is probably the Jo: Pho who was baptized on November 12, 1556, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Leonardo Galluzzo, who is listed as Nardo on the record. (Mouse over and click on the Latin church baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Unfortunately, there is no other documentation to confirm this.

On November 4, 1576, Sciacca notary Geronimo Agostino filed a notarial marriage contract for Filippo Galluzo to marry Cunsula Rosa, who is listed as Cursula Rosa on the entry. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Filippo and Cunsula were married at the Sciacca mother church on November 26, 1576. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)On their marriage record she is listed as Cunsula of Pauletto di Rosa, so her father was probably named Paolo Rosa.

Ten Sciacca baptism records have been found for the children of Master Pho and Cunsula Galluzzo, but her given name was spelled differently on these records, Consula, Cosolilla, Consola, but mostly Cunsula. Her given name is a derivative of the Spanish name Consuelo, meaning consolation. Their first five children were baptized in the mother church parish and the last five in the St. Vito parish as follows — Giovanni was baptized as Joanni on July 19, 1577; ancestor Angela; Stephano was baptized on July 27, 1579, and married Maria Indelicato on June 1, 1625; Lauria Vincenza on October 27, 1581; Geronimo Gregorio was baptized on March 12, 1584; Antonino was baptized on September 9, 1588, the first in the St. Vito parish, and married Teresa Martino in 1620; Eustachio, which is the Italian form of the Latin name Eustachius, meaning fruitful, was baptized on May 19, 1593; Dorothea on May 11, 1595, but probably died as an infant; another Dorothea on December 25, 1596, who also probably died young; and lastly, another Dorothea who was baptized on May 24, 1599, and married Calogero Intermagio from what looks like an abbreviation of Caltabellotta in 1628.

It is documented that Filippo was still alive when his daughter Dorothea was married on December 2, 1628. Four months later, Filippo died and was buried in the St Domenico convent church cemetery on April 13, 1629. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church burial record image left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His St. Vito burial record lists him as Master Pho Galluzzo 80 years old, which puts his birth to about 1549, but if that is his baptism record above, he was actually 72 years old when he died. Unfortunately, it is not known when Cunsula died, so nothing else is known about them.

~<^>~

Giovanni Santangelo’s ancestry is unknown, but he lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. Who he married is unknown, but they had at least three sons baptized in the mother church parish of Sciacca as follows — Tommaso baptized as Masi in early January of 1530; ancestor Gaspare; and Giovanni Accusio, who was baptized as Jo Cursa in October of 1541. These are all index listings, as there are no register records prior to 1543. On all of these index records a mother’s name is not given and the father is simply listed as Jo.

There are several entries for his name in both volumes of Pellegrino Mortillaro’s books, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico. In volume one, there are five inventory entries for his name for the years 1543, 1561, 1562, 1568 and 1594. In volume 2 there are three Testamento (will) entries for the years 1534, 1542 and 1561. Any one or two of these could be for ancestor Giovanni, but without further documentation, it is impossible to know for sure. Of these options, it is most likely ancestor Giovanni filed his will on December 27, 1542, with Sciacca notary Federico Bonachia and died shortly before September 26, 1543, the date an inventory of his property was taken and filed by Sciacca notary Bartolomeo Modica. (Mouse over and click on what might be his will entry image left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) But again, this is just speculation. For now, this is all that is known about him.

~< Back to Chart >~

Baldo Geremia and his wife Preziosa Fichilo's ancestries are unknown, but they lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. On November 10, 1529, Sciacca notary Giovanni Cutrona filed a notarial marriage contract for them which is documented in volume 1 of Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Sciacca church records are not available for research this far back.

Only three mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Baldo Geremia as follows — Vita was baptized in September of 1530; Giovanni Francesco was baptized as Jo: Franco in late October of 1542; and ancestor Antonella, who was baptized after her father’s death. On all but ancestor Antonella’s records, a mother’s name is not listed. Being that there is a 12 year gap between the first baptism and the second, they probably had other children during this gap. They may have moved out of the the mother church parish, to a parish where baptism records are not available for research for this time.

It is not known exactly when Baldo and Preziosa died, but it is documented that Baldo was deceased when ancestor Antonella was baptized on December 25, 1544. In Mortillaro’s book mentioned above, it states that on September 30, 1544, Baldo wrote his will and it was filed by Sciacca notary Marco Perniciaro. (Mouse over and click on his will entry image left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) A year later on October 20, 1545, an inventory was taken and filed by the same notary. Could it be that Mortillaro made a mistake and the October inventory was in 1644, as it is listed within other 1544 entries? If so, that would mean Baldo died shortly before October 20, 1544. Over two years later on March 17, 1548, there are two more inventory entries filed by the same notary for his name. Could these be for his children’s inheritance as they came of age? Unfortunately, without more information, this will remain a mystery, as nothing else is known about them.
