Francesco Modica was born and baptized on April 18, 1706, as Francescus Accursius at the St, Michele church in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Anna Gulino and her husband Simon Modica. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) He is listed as being 7 years old on his father’s 1714 Sciacca Rivelo(tax record).

On January 6th, 9th, and 16th, marriage banns were read at St Michael Archangeli for Francesco Modica and Anna Militello. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) She was born on November 13, 1662, and baptized that same day as Anna Angela, at the St. Michele church in Sciacca, the  daughter of Calogera Bonanno and her husband Matteo Militello.  (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)   Francesco and Anna were married there a few days later on January 18, 1729. Anna is the only known Both sets of these parents were listed on the marriage document.

There are ten baptism records found for the children of Francesco and Anna, the first nine were baptized at the mother church as follows — Simon Vincenzius, on January 3, 1730, was named after his father’s father, and died at 3 months old on April 19, 1730; Vincenzo Joachim Joannes, who was born, on July 22, 1731, baptized the next day and married Angela Caterina Rizzuto on May 7, 1754; Calogera Francisca, born on July 6, 1734, baptized the next day and died at 2 months old on September 24, 1734; Guiseppe, born on August 25, 1735, and baptized that same day as Francesco Joseph; Accursia Maria, born on October 9, 1738; Calogera Margherita, born on February 11, 1741, and baptized the next day, but probably died before her 5th birthday ; Maria Anna on November 8, 1742, and baptized the next day; Calogera Pellegrina Maria, born on August 18, 1745, who probably died before her 2nd birthday; Calogera Maria, born on April 10, 1747, and baptized the next day; and ancestor Paolina.

There is a 1747 Sciacca Rivelo (tax return) that could be for this family. (Mouse over and click on the Rivelo image lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) It states Francesco was 40 years old, calculating his birthdate to about 1707, the son of Gaspare and what looks like an abbreviation for Ana Modica, again no maiden name for the wife. Five children are listed with them, but ages are only given for the males — 16 year-old son Vincenzo, born about 1731; 12 year-old Guiseppe, born about 1735; 9 year-old son Francisco, born about 1738; and two daughters Anna Marie and Calogera. It is assumed they are listed in age order. These are very similar to the above baptism records, but the father being listed as Gasper is a problem. This document is not dated, but the information was collected in 1747 and 1748, so birth years are estimated. The tax calculations on the page infer Francesco had no taxable real property. Ancestor Paolina’s name is not listed on this tax record, as she was born after it was compiled. Could the name Gaspare, just be a simply error, or is this a completely different family?

It is not known when Francesco and Anna died, but they were alive when their son Vincenzo was married on May 7, 1754, but deceased by the time their daughter ancestor Paolina was married on August 3, 1826. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about them.

Simon Modica was born on February 25, 1671, and baptized that same day as Joseph Simon Fabricius at the mother church in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Francesco Modica and his wife Antonina diMino. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

In 1700, on April 25th, May 1st and 2nd church banns were read for Simon to marry Anna Gulino. She was born in Sciacca the morning of November 13, 1662, and baptized at St. Michele’s church, the same day as Anna Maria, the daughter of Marco Gulino and his wife Geronima Scaturro. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Twenty-nine year-old Simone and 37 year-old Anna were married in Sciacca at St. Michele’s church on May 4, 1700. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Simon and Anna had at least five children, all born in Sciacca. The first three were baptized at St. Michele’s church, and the last two at the mother church as follows — Antonia Maria, named after her father’s mother, was born on February 1, 1701 and baptized the next day; Mario Antonino was born and baptized on June 13, 1704; Francescus Accursius was born and baptized on April 18, 1706; Michael Angelo Stefano was baptized on October 22, 1708; and Antoninus Calogerus was born and baptized on June 11, 1711. They may have had other children, but these are the ones documented to date.

There is a Sciacca Rivelo (tax record), dated July 29, 1714, for this family. It lists 50 year-old Simone d’Modica and his wife Anna, surname and age not listed, and their three children — seven year-old ancestor Francesco; three year-old Antonino, which puts his birth about 1711; and a daughter Antonia, age not listed. (Mouse over and click on the Rivelo image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) It would seem that their sons Mario and Michael had died young. Note that his parents are not listed on the Rivelo. This tax record is badly water damaged, but it is clear he didn’t own very much.

It is not known when Simon and Anna died, but they were both alive when their son ancestor Francesco was married on January 18, 1729. Unfortunately, this is all we know about this family.

Matteo Militello was born on September 16, 1681, in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, and baptized that same day as Matthew Vito, at the St Michele church, the only known son of Anna (surname unknown) and Michele Militello. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

On May 13th, 18th and 22nd, banns were read in church for Matteo to marry Calogera Bonanno. She was born on September 8, 1687, in Sciacca, and baptized that same day at the St Michele church, as Calogera Julia, the only known daughter of Beatrice (surname unknown) and Francesco Bonanno. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Matteo and Calogera were married at St. Michele’s church in Sciacca on June 1, 1704. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Four St. Michele infant baptism records have been found for the children of Matteo and Anna as follows— ancestor Anna, named after her father’s mother; Beatrix Antonina named after her mother’s mother on October 20, 1710; son Giovanni, on June 10, 1712, as Joannes Aurelius; and Antonina Beatrix, born on January 3, 1714 and baptized the next day. They probably had other children, but these are the ones documented to date.

There is a Sciacca Rivelo (tax record) dated July 25, 1714, for this family. (Mouse over and click on the Rivelo image right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Matteo is listed as 33 years old with a father named Michele. Matteo’s wife Calogera, and 2 daughters are listed next, but no ages are given for them. The children listed are ancestor Anna, and Antonia, who is probably the Antonina Beatrix listed above. The other two children, Beatrix and Giovanni, probably died within a year or two of their births. This Rivelo has several lines of text on it, which may indicate that they owned some taxable property.

Not much is known about Matteo and Calogera’s parents, except that both sets of parents were alive at the time their children were married. It is not known when Matteo and Calogera died, but he was deceased and she was alive when their daughter Anna was married on January 18, 1729. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about Calogera, Matteo, and their parents.

Francesco Modica was born on July 15, 1640, in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy and baptized the next day as Domenico Franceso, at the mother church there. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) He was the son of Simone Modica and his wife Onofria Vinci and the elder brother to ancestor Leonarda. On his father’s 1652 Sciacca Rivelo (tax record), he is listed as eleven year-old Francesco.

On July 10th, 17th, and 22nd, church banns were read for Francesco to marry Antonia diMino. She was born in Sciacca the morning of December 2, 1645, and baptized that same day at the mother church there, as Antonia Francesca and a third middle name that is unrecognizable, but is written as Atevia in the index and what looks like Aatevya on the register record. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) She was the daughter of Antonino diMino and his wife Angela Turturici and sister to ancestor Paolo. Francesco and Antonia were married at the mother church in Sciacca on August 1, 1667, the same day that his sister Leonarda, and her brother Paolo were married, probably in a double wedding. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Three baptism records have been found for the children of Francesco and Antonia. The first two were baptized at the mother church and the third at St. Michele’s as follows — Anna Caterina on November 15, 1668; ancestor Simon; and Antonino Vito on October 29, 1674. They probably had several other children, but these are the ones found to date.

It is not known when Francesco and Antonia died, but they were deceased when their son, ancestor Simon was married on May 4, 1700. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about them at this time.

Simone Modica was baptized on April 9, 1615, at the St Michele church in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Francesco Modica and his wife Caterina Cilona. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

On March 28, 1639, in Sciacca, Simone entered into a notarial contract to marry Onofria Vinci. She was born in Sciacca on January 24, 1619, and baptized the same day at the mother church there as Leonarda Honophia, daughter of Vito Vinci and his wife Consula Catania. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Three months after the contract was created, on April 24th, 25th and May 1st church banns were read for them to marry. The next day, on May 2, 1639, Simone and Onofria were married at the mother church in Sciacca. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) They are the parents of two ancestors, Francesco whose descendants go down the Marotta line and his sister Leonarda, whose descendants go down the Sabella line.

Seven mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Simone and Onofria as follows — ancestor Francesco; Vitus Crispinus Nicolaus on October 25, 1642; Giuseppe was born on January 26, 1645, and baptized the next day as Joseph Phillippo; ancestor Leonarda; Margarita Maria on August 13, 1653; Calogero Pietro Gaetano was born on March 23, 1656, and baptized the next day; and Giacomo, who was born and baptized on April 19, 1660, as Jacobus Vitus.

There is a May 9, 1652 Sciacca Rivelo (tax record) for this family. (Mouse over and click on their 1652 Rivelo record image right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) It states Simone’s parents names and gives his age as 35 years old, which puts his birth about 1617. Onofria is simply listed with her given name as his wife and then their five children, three whose baptism records were not found, listed in the following order — 11 year-old ancestor Francesco; daughter Caterina was probably born about 1643 or 44 and named after her father’s mother; ancestor Leonarda; daughter Giovanna was probably born about 1651 or 52; and 7 year-old son Calogero, was probably born about 1646, and died before his 10th birthday.

It is not known when Simone and Onofrio died, but they both were alive when their two children married into the diMino family on August 1, 1667. Unfortunately, at this time, this is all we know about them.

Antonino diMino was baptized on June 1, 1618, at the mother church in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Leonardo diMino and his wife Antonella Bivona. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

In Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Primo, there is a marriage contract entry for Antonino Mino and Angela Turturici in Sciacca on December 27, 1639. That same day and on the 31st and again on January 1st, church banns were read for Antonino to marry Angela. She was born on August 14, 1632, and baptized that same day as Angela Accursia at the mother church in Sciacca, the daughter of Accursio Turturici and his wife Santa Grado. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Note that her middle name is the female version of her father’s name. Antonino and Angela were married at the mother church in Sciacca on January 8, 1640. (Mouse over and click on their church marriage record image left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) They are the parents of two ancestors. Paolo’s descendants go down the Sabella line and Antonina’s descendants go down the Marotta line.

Antonino and Angela had at least eight children, all baptized on the dates shown at the mother church in Sciacca — ancestor Paolo; ancestor Antonina; Leonarda Anna on January 9, 1651, was named the female version of her paternal grandfather; a child without a given name on November 30, 1652, who was baptized by the midwife because of imminent danger of death and probably died soon after his birth; Giuseppe, who was born on August 5, 1656, and baptized the next day as Joseph Gaetano Accusio, and probably died before his 5th birthday; Ignazio Raphael on August 25, 1658; Giuseppe, who was born on August 20, 1661 and baptized the next day as Joseph Albertius Jacineus; and Vincenzo Francesco on July 22, 1664.

It is not known when Antonio and Angela died, but they were alive on August 1, 1667, when their daughter Antonia was married. Unfortunately, at this time, this is all we know about them.

Francesco Modica was baptized at the mother church in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, on April 2, 1582, the son of Simon Modica and his wife, Dominica, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

In 1611, on April 25th, May 1st and 3rd church banns were read for Francesco to marry Caterina Cilona. She was baptized on September 17, 1589, at the St. Michele church in Sciacca as Caterina Angela, the daughter of Vito Cilona and his wife Antonella, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Francesco and Caterina were married at the St. Michele church in Sciacca on June 19, 1611. (Mouse over and click on their church marriage record image left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Only four St. Michele baptism records have been found for the children of Francesco and Caterina Modica as follows —Maria on March 2, 1612; ancestor Simone; Domenica on June 5, 1617, who was named after her father’s mother; and Carolus Joseph on December 12, 1619. They probably had other children, but these are the ones documented to date.

Francesco and Caterina both had siblings. Francesco’s parents, Simon and Dominica had at least five children, all baptized at the mother church in Sciacca as follows — Giacomo, baptized as Jacobo Blasi on February 4, 1579; ancestor Francesco; Calogero Vito on March 29, 1588; Pietro on March 31, 1595, who apparently died before his fourth birthday; and another Pietro on January 27, 1599.

Caterina’s parents, Vito and Antonella, had at least four children, all baptized at the St. Michele church in Sciacca as follows — Leonardo on November 6, 1587; ancestor Caterina; Nicolo Pietro on April 12, 1592; and Paolo Francesco on February 7, 1594.

The only other information on Francesco and Caterina’s parents is that his father Simon was deceased and her father Vito was alive when their children were married in 1611. It is not known when Francesco and Caterina died, but they both were listed as deceased on ancestor Simone’s May 2, 1639, marriage document. For now, nothing else is known about them.

Vito Vinci was the son of Vincenzo Vinci and his wife Filippa, whose surname is unknown. On February 11, 1614, at the St. Michele Church in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, Vito married Consula Catania. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) She was the daughter of Calogero Catania and his unnamed wife. Sciacca baptism records can not be found for either of them, but they lived in and raised a family in Sciacca.

Eight baptism records have been found for the children of Vito and Consula Vinci, all born in Sciacca. Their first child was baptized at St. Michele’s church, but the rest were baptized at the mother church, the Basilica of Maria Santissima del Soccorso, as follows — Caterina on November 29, 1614; Giuseppe on October 25, 1616, who may have died young; Vincenzo Calogero on November 21, 1617; ancestor Onofria; Paolo was born and baptized as Paulus Nicolaus on November 15, 1622; Filippa was born and baptized as Pha Vincentia on November 18, 1626; Giuseppe, baptized as Joseph Antoninus Francesco on October 23, 1630; and Calogero Joseph on February 20, 1635.

Nothing is known about Vito and Consula’s parents except that his father, Vincenzo was deceased when Vito was married, but his mother and her father were still alive. It is also not known when Vito and Consula died, but they were deceased on May 2, 1639, when their daughter ancestor Onofria was married. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about them or their parents.

Accursio Turturici was baptized as Accursio Vinc’o on February 27, 1600, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Antonino Turturici and his wife Antonia Chiaramonte. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

On March 13, 1620, Sciacca notary Gaspare Falone recorded a notarial contract for Accursio to marry Santa Grado. She was the daughter of Vincenzo Grado and his wife Angela, whose surname is unknown. The following month, church banns were read on April 21st, 25th and 26th for 20 year-old Accursio and Santa to marry. They were married at the St. Michele church in Sciacca on May 4, 1620. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Only four baptism records have been found for the children of Accursio and Santa Turturici. The first two were baptized at St. Michele’s and the last two at the mother church, the Basilica of Maria Santissima del Soccorso, as follows — Antonino on July 1, 1621; Angela, born on July 28, 1624, and baptized the next day, probably died before her 8th birthday; Antonia, born on the the morning of October 31, 1628, and baptized the same day; and ancestor Angela. They may have had other children, but these are the only ones found in the available Sciacca church records.

Not much is known about Santa’s parents except that they had two other daughters, both baptized at St. Michele’s — Calogera on September 14, 1601, and Francesca Margarita on March 13, 1610. It is also documented that Santa’s parents, Vincenzo and Angela, were both deceased when Accursio and Santa were married in 1620.

It is not known when Accursio and Santa died, but they were both deceased when their daughter ancestor Angela was married on January 8, 1640. Unfortunately, for now, nothing else is known about them or their parents.

Antonino Turturici was baptized as Vincenzo Antonino on October 24, 1571, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Antonella Chirulla and her husband Pietro Turturici. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

In December of 1593, on the 26th, 27th and 28th, church banns were read for Antonino to marry Antonella Chiaramonte. She was the daughter of Margarita Finochio and her husband Benedetto Chiaramonte, but a baptism record for her has not been found in the available records. She is also sister to ancestor Vito who married Maria Saittuni. On some records Antonella is called Antonia. A few weeks after the last banns were read, 22 year-old Antonino married Antonella on January 16, 1594. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Eleven Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Antonino and Antonella Turturici as follows —Pietro, named after his paternal grandfather was baptized as Petrus Jacobus on August 9, 1598; ancestor Accursio; Vincenzo as Vin’o on February 15, 1605; Vito, on June 20, 1608; Filippa Caterina on August 26, 1610; Calogera on October 20, 1612; Michele was baptized as Micheli Bernardo on September 28, 1614; Mathio on September 21, 1616; Francesco was born and baptized as Francius Joseph on October 3, 1620; Leonarda was born and baptized as Leonarda Joanna on August 22, 1622; and another Pietro was born on November 7, 1623, and baptized the next day as Petrus Francs.

Not much is known about Antonino’s parents except that Petro Turturichi and the daughter of Antonino Mariano Chirulla named Antonina were married in the Sciacca mother church on October 15, 1570. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marrage image lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

There is a mother church burial record for an Ant’nus Torturici, 80 years old, who was buried in the mother church cemetery on May 12, 1638. (Mouse over and click on his possible Latin baptism record image lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) This record may be for this ancestor, but the age is way off. Ancestor Antonino would have been only 66 at this time, but death record ages are somewhat unreliable. Unfortunately, it is not known when Antonella died, so for now, this is all that’s known about them.
