Carlo Imbornone was baptized as Carlo Vincenzo on June 22, 1617, in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Angela Bosco and her husband Battista Imbornone. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) It should be noted that his surname is often spelled differently- as Inburnuni and some without the first letter I, found under M for Murnuni.

On May 10, 1634, Sciacca notary Raffaele Bentivegna filed a notarial marriage contract for Carlo and Caterina Sanfilippo. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry, upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) She was baptized on November 24, 1617, in the Sciacca mother church parish, the daughter of Filippo Sanfilippo and his wife Angela, whose surname may be Murano. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) More than a month after the contract was filed, on June 20, 1634, Carlo, who was two days short of his 17th birthday married 16 ½ year old Caterina at the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) On some of the records found for him, he is called master.

Six Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Carlo and Catherina Imbornone as follows — Batta was born and baptized as Joas Batta Marcus Murnuni, after his paternal grandfather, on April 25, 1635, and in 1659 married Francisca Riportelli as master Batta son of Catherine and deceased Caroli Imbornone; Antonino was born on the morning of January 16, 1637, was baptized as Antno Marius Thomas that same day, but died at 3 months old and was buried on April 27, 1637; Dominica Antonia was born and baptized on September 2, 1639, but died 13 months later and was buried on October 30, 1640; Caterina, given a middle name after her maternal grandmother, was born and baptized as Catharina Angela on the evening of March 8, 1641, but died at 3 months old and was buried on July 2nd; ancestor Geronimo; and Thomasa Angela, who was born and baptized on December 20, 1643. Only two of their six children, Batta and ancestor Geronimo are documented as reaching adulthood.

There is a Sciacca Rivelo (tax record) dated May 10, 1652, that Caterina’s name is on. (Mouse over and click on the Rivelo image lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) It is assumed Carlo died and Caterina moved in with some of her siblings, but there are issues with it. First off, there are no parents listed, so it isn’t certain this is for her family, but her parents were deceased at this time. Secondly, the ages of all who are listed are way off. Caterina’s brother, Calogero is listed as the 47 year old head of the house, but he was only 22 years old at this time; her brother Antonino is listed as 45 years old, but he was only 14 years old; and her son, Gio: Batta is listed as the 5 year old nephew of Calogero, but he should be 17 years old by now. Caterina and her sister Sebastiana are listed without ages as Calogero’s sisters. It may be that under the law, Calogero wasn’t old enough to be head of the household, so he lied about everyone’s ages. Where 10 year old ancestor Geronimo and his younger sister Tommasa are, is unknown. Although the ages are so way off, this tax record is most likely for Caterina’s family.

It is not known for certain when Carlo and Caterina died, but it is documented that he was deceased by February 17, 1659, the date his son Batta was married. Carlo was probably deceased before May 10, 1652, the date of the tax record mentioned above. Unfortunately a Sciacca burial record could not be found for his exact name, but there is one that may be for him. (Mouse over and click on the Latin burial record lower middle left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) A St. Vito burial record dated November 16, 1651, for Carolus Inonini or Maorni, who was about 37 years old and buried in the St. Dominici church cemetery has been found. Ancestor Carlo would have been in his 35th year of life, so the age is in the right range and with all the misspellings of his name, this very well may be his burial record.

It is also not known if Caterina remarried, but a St. Michele marriage record or contract could not be found for her. What is known is that she was still alive when her son, ancestor Geronimo was married on February 2, 1670. There is however a St. Michele burial record dated June 24, 1670, for a 65 year old Catharina Sanfilippo, who was buried in the church of St. Maria de Carmelo cemetery. (Mouse over and click on the Latin burial record lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) There is no other identifying information on the record and ancestor Caterina would have only been 52 years old, but this may be for her, especially since she may have moved in with her siblings and began using her maiden name again.

Until more records can be found, much about this family will remain a mystery. For now, this all that is known about them.

Battista Imbornone was baptized as Jo: Batta on April 29, 1579, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Giacomo Imbornone and his wife Petruza, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) On most of his adult records he is called master, meaning he was well respected in his craft. Unfortunately,

On November 1st, 4th and 11th, church banns were read for Battista to marry Angela Bosco. She was the daughter of Ambrosio Bosco and his wife Pietra, whose surname is unknown. Angela is also the sister of ancestor Vincenza Bosco. A Sciacca baptism record for her exact name could not be found, but she probably is the Ant’na, daughter of Ambroxo and Petruza lo Vosco who was baptized on November 14, 1591, in the mother church parish of Sciacca. (Mouse over and click on her possible baptism record lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Because the priest spelled her surname with a V instead of a B, he may have been hard of hearing, or had one too many celebratory glasses of wine over the course of the day! In any case it seems logical that Ant’na is Angela, as she would have had to been born before 1694. Twenty-eight year-old Battista married 16 year-old Angila on November 26, 1607, in the Sciacca St. Michele church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)

Five Sciacca St. Michele baptism records have been found for the children of master Baptista and Angila Imbornoni as follows — Giacomo, named for his paternal grandfather, was baptized as Jacous Petis on July 31, 1609, and married Maria Papadopoli on October 25, 1633; Petra, named after both of her grandmothers, was baptized on June 5, 1614, and married Salvatore Greco in 1632; ancestor Carlo; Pietro was born on the evening of June 26, 1620, and baptized as Petrus the next day; and Crispina, who was born on January 5, 1623, and baptized the next day.

It is documented that Battista was deceased on September 11, 1632, the date his daughter Petra was married. Battista wrote his will and it was filed by Sciacca notary Antonino Amico on September 13, 1624. Three days later Battista died at home and was buried in the Sciacca mother church cemetery on September 16th. (Mouse over and click on his burial record lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His St. Michele burial record lists him as Master Batta Imbornumi, forty, but he was actually 45 years old when he died. An inventory of his estate was taken and filed by the same notary on October 8, 1624. It is not known when Angela died or if she remarried, as a Sciacca second church marriage record could not be found for her. At this time, this is all that is known about them.

Filippo Sanfilippo's ancestry is uncertain. He could be the Vito Pho who was baptized on September 5, 1582, the son of Antonino and Angela Sanpho san Trumbetta. (Mouse over and click on his possible Latin baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) He may also be the Petro Filippo who was baptized on January 13, 1590, the son of ancestors Geronimo Sanfilippo and Margarita Bentivegna, who was called Filippo on their 1594 Rivelo (tax record), which is seen in their bio. (Mouse over and click on his other possible Latin baptism record upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Both baptisms took place in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, but which one is the ancestor is unknown. To confuse matters even more, there are two instances of the patents names that show up in Filippo’s children's names, one from each family— the middle name of his first born son and the given name of his sixth son. Another possibility is that ancestor Filippo may not be the child of either of them. Because he named three sons Giuseppe, another possibility is that he is the son of Giuseppe and Beatrice Sanfilippo, but a son named Filippo has not been found for them. His ancestry remains one of many mysteries.

Sometime before or in 1617, he married a woman named Angela. She may be Angela Murano who was contracted to marry a Filippo Sanfilippo, but the contract is undated. Their contract was found in the 1636-37 bundle of papers, but as in the past, this just could be a filing error. All that is known for sure is that she was named Angela.

Eleven Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Pho and Angela SanPho as follows — ancestor Caterina; Accursio was born on the evening of February 29, 1620, and baptized as Accursius Hier’nus (Latin for Geronimo) the next day; Giuseppe was born and baptized as Joseph Bastianus on February 12, 1622, but may have died young; another Giuseppe was born on January 30, 1623, and baptized as Joseph the next day, but also may have died young; a third Giuseppe was born and baptized as Joseph on January 1, 1625; Calogero Ignazio was born and baptized on July 31, 1629, and married Leonarda Raso on January 18, 1660; Sebastiana was born and baptized as Bastiana on March 5, 1632, and married Vito Noto in 1658; Maria was born and baptized on September 10, 1634; Antonino was born and baptized as Antonius Thomas on August 22, 1637; Dominico was born on the evening of July 18, 1640, and was baptized the next day as Domincus Francicus; and Thomasia, who was born on the evening of October 28, 1642, and baptized the next day.

It is documented that both Filippo and Angela were deceased on May 17, 1658, when their daughter Sebastiana was married. Angela died and was buried in the mother church cemetery on June 27, 1648, leaving her husband with several young children. (Mouse over and click on her burial record middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Her mother church burial record lists her as, Angela wife of Philippo Sanfilippo, about 45 years old, which puts her birth to about 1603, but she may have been a bit older than that. What it does state is that Filippo was still alive at this time, so he died sometime in that 10 year span between his wife’s burial and his daughter’s marriage. Even though Filppo was left with young children, a Sciacca second marriage for him could not be found.

There is a Testamento (will) entry in Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Secondo, that is probably for ancestor Filippo. (Mouse over and click on the will entry lower left to enlarge it in a new window or tab.) Sciacca notary Raffaele Bentivegna recorded the will on August 16, 1649. Two days later, on the 18th, he was buried in the St. Augustini cemetery. (Mouse over and click on his burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His mother church burial record lists him as, Philippo Sanfilippo about 65 years old. This puts his birth to about 1604, too young to father a child in 1617, so he was probably much older than that.

Unfortunately, much of this bio is uncertain, with some assumptions made. Records for this time period are usually good, but for this family, they are scarce. Until more documentation can be found, this is all that can be said about them.

Giacomo Imbornone and his wife Petruza’s ancestries are unknown, but they lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. A Sciacca church marriage or contract record could not be found for them. What has been found are six mother church baptism records for the children of Jacobo Imbornuni including four that list his wife as Perna, Pertuza, Pioruzza or Pitruza.

The baptism records found are as follows — Margarita, who was baptized as Margaritella Desiata on September 5, 1569; Paulo on October 30, 1571; Giuseppe was baptized as Joseppi Epifanipo on January 6, 1574; Giacomo was baptized as Jac’o Vinc’o on May 13, 1576; ancestor Battista; and Nunzia Margarita, who was baptized on April 3, 1584.

It is not known when Giacomo and Petruza died, but they were both listed as deceased on ancestor Battista’s November 26, 1607, marriage record. Unfortunately Sciacca burial records do not begin until September of 1606 and they are not listed in the available records time frame. Until more records can be found, this is all that is known about them.
