Francesco Montagnino was baptized as Antonino Franc’o on October 15, 1604, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Nunzia Napoli and her husband Ippolito Montagnino. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab).

On July 11, 1627, Sciacca notary Giovanna Battista Mineo filed a notarial marriage contract for Francesco to marry Caterina Foti. She was baptized as Calogera Caterina, on March 3, 1613, also in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Margarita Coco and her husband Sebastiano Foti. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church baptism record middle right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Over five months after the contract was filed, church banns were read on December 27th, 31st and January 2nd of the next year for them to marry. Two weeks later, 23 year-old Francesco married 14 year-old Caterina on January 16, 1628, at the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Eleven Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Francesco and Caterina Montagnino as follows — Calogero was born on the morning of July 23, 1628, baptized that same day as Calogerius Hyppolitus after his paternal grandfather, and married Vita Anna Asaro, the daughter of ancestors Gaspare Asaro and Diana Mantia; Giuseppe was born on March 28, 1630, and was baptized as Joseph Jo: Domincus the next day; Giovanna was born and baptized as Joanna Accursia on August 21, 1632; Antonino was born and baptized as Ant’nus Joseph on June 7, 1635, but died at 14 months old on August 11, 1636; another Antonino was born on the morning of June 20, 1637, baptized as Antoninus Marius that same day, and married Philippa Amato in 1666; Vincenzo was born on November 13, 1640, and baptized as Vincenzo Nicolaus Dominicius the next day; ancestor Margarita was named after her maternal grandmother; Anna Calogera was born and baptized on January 1, 1646, but died and was buried 7 months later on August 23, 1646; Giacomo was born on July 24, 1647, baptized as Jacoby Vincenzo the next day, and married Maria Bonjova in 1674; Nunzio was born on September 17, 1650, and was baptized the next day with the male version of his paternal grandmother’s name; and Michele, who was born on the evening of May 29, 1654, baptized the next day as Michael Vin’zo Vitus Leonardus, and married Antonina Bonsignore in 1684.

There is a May 9, 1652 Rivelo (tax record) found for this family. (Mouse over and click on their Rivelo record lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) It lists Francesco as the 48 year-old head of house, but he was actually only 47½ at the time. His wife Catharina is listed next without an age, six of their surviving children who were born at this time — 23 year-old Calogero was listed as being 20; 22 year old Giuseppe was listed as 17; 14 year-old Antonino was listed as 11; and then their three daughters Giovanna, ancestor Margarita and Nunzia, are listed without an age. Did they not know the real ages of their sons, or did they make them younger for a reason? On the top of the page Francesco’s parents are listed as deceased Polito and Nunzio Fotto. The surname for Francesco’s mother is incorrect, as her maiden name was Napoli. But Francesco’s wife Caterina’s maiden name was Foti, so a common mistake was made. There is a 14.8 tax due under the beni stabili section, which is non-moveable possessions, like a house or land, so they owned some property.

It is documented that both Francesco and Caterina were alive on September 9, 1666, when their son Antonino was married. It is also documented that Caterina was deceased, but Francesco was alive on October 14, 1674, when their son Giacomo was married. Caterina died and was buried in the St. Dominico church cemetery on October 23, 1672. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Her mother church burial record incorrectly reads Caterina daughter of Francisco Montagnino about 60 years old, but it should say wife not daughter. She was actually only 59 years old when she died. Francesco died sometime between October 14, 1674, and April 12, 1682, the date his son Michele was married. Unfortunately, burial records for this period are not available for research, so for now, this is all that is known about them.

Ippolito Montagnino was the son of Geronima and Pietro Montagnino of Sambuca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, so it is assumed he was born and raised there. He married and raised a family in Sciacca, also in the province of Agrigento, about 20 miles south and a bit west of Sambuca. His given name has been recorded as Hippolito, Hyppolito, and Polito, which is probably a nickname.

On January 7, 1604, Ippolito married 21 year-old Nunzia Napoli at the mother church in Sciacca. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Nunzia was baptized on November 2, 1582, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Filippa Verdiramo and her husband Domenico Napoli. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church baptism record right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Nine Agrigento province baptism records have been found for the children of Polito and Nunzia Montagnino, most, including the last six, were baptized in the Sciacca mother church parish, but their second child was baptized in Sambuca and their third child in the Sciacca St. Michele parish. The children are as follows — ancestor Francesco was baptized in the Sciacca mother church parish; Pietro, named after his paternal grandfather was baptized as Petri on April 11, 1608, in Sambuca but died five days later and was buried there on April 16, 1608; Giovanni was baptized on July 12, 1609, as Gioanni Giuse, the only one baptized in the Sciacca St. Michele parish; Filippa, named after her maternal grandmother, was baptized as Filippa Honofria, the first back in the Sciacca mother church parish, but she may have died young; Carlo Vincenzo was baptized on December 30, 1613; Geronima, named after her paternal grandmother was baptized on July 29, 1615, and married Giuseppe Azzara in 1632; another Filippa was baptized as Philippa Barbara on January 2, 1618; Catharina was born on February 20, 1620, and baptized the next day; and their last child, Giuseppe was born and baptized as Joseph Antonino on November 28, 1623, and on September 15, 1658, in Sciacca, married Antonina Scarpinato, the daughter of ancestors Antonino Scarpinato and Catherine Palermo.

Nothing is known about Ippolito’s parents Pietro and Geronima except that they both were alive when Ippolito was married in 1604. It is assumed that they lived out their lives and died in Sambuca, but records have not been found to confirm this. It is documented that Ippolito and Nunzia were both alive on January 16, 1628, the date their son ancestor Francesco was married. Nunzia died and was buried in the mother church cemetery on March 9, 1640. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Her mother church burial record lists her as, Nunzia Montagnino 60 wife of the deceased Hipoliti Montagnino, but she was only 57 when she died. Ippolito died between January 16, 1628, and February 8, 1632, but a Sciacca church burial record could not be found for him within this 4 year span. Until his burial record can be located, this is all that is known about them.

~< Back to Chart >~

Sebastiano Foti was baptized as Vito Bastiano on January 20, 1566, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Tomaso Foti and his wife Lucerzia, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

On April 20, 1587, when Sebastiano was 21 years old, he married Giovanna Baxili at the Sciacca mother church. They had at least 2 children together, both baptized in the mother church parish —Giovanna on December 7, 1589; and Vincenzo on December 10, 1593. Giovanna died and Sebastiano remarried.

On April 11th 12th and 18th of 1605 church banns were read for Sebastiano to marry Margarita Coco. She was baptized as Vinc’a Margarita on April 5, 1590, in the Sciacca mother church parish, the daughter of Perna Bonanno and her husband Antonino Coco. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church baptism record middle right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) She is also the older sister to ancestor Francisco who married Caterina Torre. The now 39 year-old Sebastiano and Margarita, who just turned 15 years old, were married on April 19, 1605, at the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record upper left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) It should be mentioned that 2 records down on the same page is the same church marriage record for Sebastiano and Margarita, but it is dated April 29th. The first record is not crossed off, but it is harder to read. Most of the text on all the records on this page, after the bride, groom and witnesses information, is the same, so nothing is unusual about the second record. There isn’t another index entry, so it is assumed the recorder simply entered it twice, the second time with an incorrect date. Neither mention that Sebastiano was a widower or give his parent’s names. A month after the church marriage, on May 18, 1605, Sciacca notary Antonino Buscemi filed a notarial marriage contract for them. There is another undated marriage contract entry that was filed by the same notary in the 1620-21 files. It is not known if this is just an undated copy of the first contract, or an amendment to it.

Seven mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Bastiano and Margarita Foti as follows — Tomaso, named after his paternal grandfather, was baptized as Thomas Silvestro on December 31, 1606, and married Vincenza Scarpinato in 1632; Antonino, named after his maternal grandfather, was baptized on July 13, 1610, and married Julia Caninello in 1637; ancestor Caterina; Calogero Carlo was baptized on December 29, 1615; Giovanna Calogera was baptized on December 5, 1618; Giacomo was born on the evening of April 13, 1629, and baptized as Jacoby Joseph the next day; and Leonardo Vincenzo who was born and baptized on April 28, 1631.

It is documented that Sebastiano was alive when their son Tomaso was married on January 18, 1632. It is also documented that Sebastiano and Margarita were deceased when their son Antonino was married on April 26, 1637. Margarita died only 3 ½ years after her last child was born. She was buried in the mother church cemetery on October 1, 1633. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Her mother church burial record lists her as Margarita age 40 wife of Sebastiano de Foto, but she was actually 43 years old when she died. Her burial record documents that Sebastiano was still alive. Two years later, Sebastiano died and was buried on December 30, 1635, in the cemetery of the St. Francesco church outside the city. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His mother church burial record lists him as Sebastianus de Foto 71 years old, but he was only 69 years old when he died. For now, this is all that is known about them.

Domenico Napoli’s ancestry is unknown, but he married and raised a family in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. On January 28, 1571, Domenico married 16 ½ year-old Filippa Verdiramo at the Sciacca mother church. She was baptized as Pha on July 30, 1554, in the Sciacca mother church parish, the daughter of Sebastiana Daxanti and her husband Ambrosio Verdiramo. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Domenico and Filippa’s marriage record is very brief and simply states, Minico di Napoli with the daughter of the deceased Ambroxo Virdiramo: name Pha. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)

Six Sciacca baptism records have been found for the children of Minico and Pha di Napoli. On the last two of these records the mother is listed as Filippa, the others list her as Pha. The first five children were baptized in the mother church parish and the last child in the St. Michele parish. They probably had other children, before and/or after those listed here. Unfortunately, no other baptism records have been found in the Sciacca files available for research, but a marriage record has been found for another child, see below. The baptism records found are as follows — Calogero Vito was baptized on April 4, 1575, four years after his parents married; Vita was baptized on September 16, 1576, and married Michele Graffeo on April 13, 1600; Giuseppi Ant’no on August 12, 1579; ancestor Nunzia; Dominica was baptized as Minica on October 16, 1587; and Nicolò on September 4, 1590, the only one baptized in the St. Michele parish. The other child whose baptism record could not be found is a son named Giovanni. He is listed as the son of Minico Napoli on his marriage record to Paula Graffeo. They married on the same day, April 13, 1600, as his sister Vita married Paula’s brother Michele mentioned above, so it is most likely he was another son.

There is a Sciacca mother church burial record for 70 year old Philippa di Napoli that is probably for this ancestor, even though it doesn’t mention a husband’s name. The age listed is close to her actual age of 69, so it’s almost certain that this is for ancestor Filippa. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) She died in her home on January 8, 1624, and was buried in the mother church cemetery the next day. It is not known when Domenico died, but it is documented that he was alive on January 7, 1604, the date their daughter, ancestor Nunzia was married. A Sciacca burial record for him has not been found yet, so for now, this is all that is known about them.

~<^>~

Tomaso Foti and his wife Lucerzia’s ancestries are unknown, but they lived for a time in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, and raised a family there. A Sciacca church marriage or marriage contract can not be found for them. What has been found are three mother church baptism records for the children of Masi di Foti as follows — Giovanni was baptized as Joanni Vincenso on December 5, 1560; ancestor Sebastiano; and Antonino, who was baptized on January 9, 1568.

It is not known when Tomaso and Lucerzia died, but it is documented that they both were alive when their son ancestor Sebastiano was married for the first time on April 20, 1587. There is a Testamento (will) entry for Tomaso Foti that is dated March 16, 1588, in Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Secondo, that is probably for this ancestor. (Mouse over and click on the Testamento entry left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Tomaso probably died shortly after this will was recorded. Unfortunately, burial records for this time period are not available for research, so nothing else is known about them.

~< Back to Chart >~

Antonino Coco was baptized as Ant’llo Simoneli on October 28, 1550, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Calogera Jacuno and her husband Vito Coco. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church baptism record upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His surname is sometimes spelled Coqui in the records.

On April 28, 1572, twenty-one and a half year-old Antonino married Perna Bonanno in the Sciacca mother church. On their very brief marriage record, she is listed as the adopted daughter of Vito Bonanno, so her biological parentage is unknown. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) They are the parents of two ancestors.

Nine mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Ant’no and Perna Lo Coco as follows — Bartolomeo was baptized as Bartholomeo Affricano on August 24, 1576, and married Caterina Quartararo in 1599; Geronimo was baptized on October 6, 1579, married first Anna Mazzotta in 1602 and then Antonina Giganti in 1608; Leonarda was baptized as Narda Beatrice on July 18, 1583, and married Michele Crastuchio on September 10, 1600; Isabella Vita was baptized on November 23, 1587; Giacomo was baptized as Jacomo on November 26, 1588; ancestor Margarita; Vito, named after his paternal grandfather, was baptized as Vitus on November 20, 1593; ancestor Francisco who married Caterina Torre, was baptized on January 13, 1596; and Diana, who was baptized on September 24, 1599, and married in 1615 Giuseppe Castronovo, the son of ancestors Angelo and Julia Castronovo.

In Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Primo, Perna Coco’s name is mentioned in connection to a donation she made in 1607-08 to the St. John the Baptist Society of Purgatory of the Souls — in particular by the donation of Perna Coco to the said Society. It then goes on to state that Pernae Coco is not in the records. What this all means is unknown!

It is not known when Antonino died, but it is documented that he was alive on January 20, 1602, the date their son Geronimo was married, but deceased by September 20, 1615, the date that their daughter Diana was married. Because a burial record could not been found for him it is most likely he died before 1606, the year burial records are available for research. Perna lived many more years. She died at home on December 17, 1630, and was buried the next day in the mother church cemetery. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Her mother church burial record lists her as Perna la Coco about seventy years old died yesterday in her home. This puts her birth to about 1560, which is plausible. For now, this is all that is known about them.

~<^>~

Ambrosio Verdiramo’s ancestry is unknown, but he lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. His name comes from ancestor Filippa’s baptism and marriage records, but a mother’s name is not listed on either of these records. It is assumed that Ambrosio’s wife and Filippa’s mother was Sebastiana Daxanti, because there is a notarial marriage contract for her and Ambrosio Virdiramo. (Mouse over and click on his marriage contract entry right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) This contract was filed by Sciacca notary Nicolò Canina on August 4, 1530, which is 24 years before Filippa’s baptism.

Eight mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Ambroxio Verdiramo, but none give a mother’s name. His given name is sometimes spelled Ambrosio, but mostly it is Ambroxio. His surname is also spelled differently, Virdiramo or Verdramo. The eight baptism records found are as follows — Filippo as Pho in March of 1539, almost 9 years after the contract date; Giovanni was baptized as Jo: Bastiano in June of 1543; Vito was baptized as Vito Jo: Paulo on November 1, 1544; Bartolo Ant’no on July 16, 1547; Paola on January 25, 1552; ancestor Filippa; Giovanna was baptized as Johana Margarita on October 5, 1557; and Geronima on March 3, 1560. It should be noted that the baptism records from July of 1530 to June of 1536 are missing from the V index and there are no register records before September of 1543.

It is not known when Ambrosio and Sebastiana died, but it is documented that he was deceased on January 28, 1571, the date that his daughter, ancestor Filippa, was married. Unfortunately, there are no burial records available to research for this time period, so for now, this is all that is known about them.

~< Back to Chart >~

Vito Coco’s ancestry is unknown, but he lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. His name comes from ancestor Antonino’s baptism record, which doesn’t list a mother’s name. It is assumed that Vito’s wife and Antonino’s mother was Calogera Jacuno because there is a notarial marriage contract for her and him. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) This contract was filed by Sciacca notary Pietro Falco on November 10, 1538, which is about 12 years before ancestor Antonino’s baptism.

Eight Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Vito Coco, which is spelt several different ways including Cocio and Cozu, but most are listed as Coco. None of these records list a mother’s name and the first one has no register record. They are as follows — Giovanni was baptized as Jo: Petro in February of 1542; Leonardo as Nardo on April 4, 1547; Antonino on June 15, 1548, but he probably died young; ancestor Antonino was the second of his name; Antonella on November 25, 1554; Consula on June 5, 1558; Rosa Margaritella on December 6, 1559; and a son whose name is very hard to read, but in the index looks like Cel Giuseppe, and on the register looks like Dreiz Joseph.

It is not known when Vito and Calogera died, but there are two entries in Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico, one in each volume, that probably are for ancestor Vito. The first is a Testamento, a will, filed by Sciacca notary Ferd. Juffrida Jr. that is dated September 25, 1569, and the second is for an inventory of his property taken on December 19, 1569, and filed by the same notary. (Mouse over and click on his inventory entry left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) So Vito died sometime within this almost 3 month period. Unfortunately, there are no burial records available to research for this time span, so for now, this is all that is known about them. them.
