Giuseppe Trapani’s ancestry is unknown, but he married and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. His ancestry is unknown because his parents are not listed on his marriage record. On February 12, 1612, in the Sciacca mother church, Giuseppe married Bartola Pirruni . (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record upper right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) She was baptized as Blasia Barthola on February 3, 1595, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Giuseppe Pirruni and his wife Leonarda Garretta. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record upper left to enlarge it in a new window or tab.) They are the parents of two ancestors.
Eight Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Joseph and Barthola as follows — Caterina Apolloni was baptized on February 9, 1613, and was the first wife of ancestor Calogero Sclafani; Pietro was baptized on October 30, 1615; Filippo was baptized as Philippo Petro on January 1, 1617; Paola was born in the early hours of February 19, 1620, and baptized as Paula Francesca that same day; Antonino Leonardo was born and baptized on December 2, 1623; ancestor Vito; ancestor Calogera and Santo Vincenzo, who was born and baptized as Sacintus Vinz on January 22, 1634.
Just over 6 months later Giuseppe died and was buried in the St. Margarita church cemetery on August 7, 1634. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church burial record middle right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His mother church burial record lists him as, Joseph de Trapani, 40, but he was probably in his late 40’s when he died. Even though she was left with young children, Bartola did not remarry. There is a May 9, 1652 Sciacca Rivelo (tax record) for Bartolomea Trapani, relict of the deceased Giuseppe. (Mouse over and click on her 1652 Rivelo record lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) She only has one son living with her, a 15 year-old Vito, and a 7 year-old grandson named Giuseppe Tigano. The 15 year old son could not have been ancestor Vito as he would have been 24 years old at the time. It could be that the 15 is actually 25 with a very sloppy 1 or it may be that the 15 year-old was Santo, who would have been 18 at the time. The line through the first page may mean she wasn’t taxed because she was a widow.
Bartola lived many more years and died and was buried in the St. Dominici Convent cemetery on February 20, 1668. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Her mother church burial record lists her as, Barthleomea wife of deceased Joseph Trapani, about 75 years old, but she was only 73 when she died. Until more documents can be found, this is all that is known about Giuseppe and Bartola.

Giuseppe Pirruni’s ancestry is unknown, but he married and raised a family in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. He may be the Joseph Paulus who was born and baptized on January 24, 1663, in the mother church parish, the son of Vincenzio and Barbara Pirricuni, but there is no documentation to support this, and the surname has an additional ic in the middle of it. Although Giuseppe’s surname has been spelled many different ways on the records found for him, this ic makes it a different surname. Another problem is that the names of his parents are not reflected in his children’s names. But it is possible that Bartola is for Barbara and Vincenza is the female version of Vincenzo. For now, his parentage will remain a mystery.
On June 20, 1593, Sciacca notary Sigismondo Mandracchia issued a notarial marriage contract for Giuseppe Perrone and Leonarda Garretta. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry upper left to enlarge them in a new window or tab.) She was baptized on September 12, 1576, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Antonino Garretta and his wife Geronima, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism record upper right to enlarge it in a new window or tab.) Four days after the contract was filed, church banns were read on June 24th, 27th and 29th. The day after the last banns were read, Giuseppe Pruni and 16 year-old Leonarda were married on June 30, 1593, in the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record middle left to enlarge in a new window or tab.)
Eight Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Giuseppe and Leonarda Pirruni as follows — ancestor Bartola; Vita Francesca was baptized on December 20, 1597; Giovanna Caterina on November 3, 1599, and as Catherina married Horazio Bagnano in 1635; Antonino Calogero on December 22, 1602; Vincenza was baptized as Vin’a on March 5, 1605; Francesca on October 3, 1608; Antonia on July 29, 1611; and Margarita, who was baptized on April 12, 1615.
There are three mentions of his name in Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Secondo. Two are for Giuseppe Perrone for land in Cartibubo, dated August 11, 1622 and November 19, 1629. Cartibubo is a coastal area in the province of Trapani, 32 miles northwest of Sciacca. (Mouse over and click on the 1629 contract entry middle right to enlarge them in a new window or tab.) Today it's known for its beach resort and is a popular spot for kitesurfing. The third entry is a sale of land in Raxhanella by Giuseppe Pirruni to Accurso Perratore, dated October 7, 1625. Unfortunately, no information about Raxhanella has been found.
It is documented that both Giuseppe and Leonarda were deceased when their daughter Giovanna Caterina was married on January 7, 1635. Giuseppe died outside the city and was buried in the St. Vito cemetery on August 21, 1634. (Mouse over and click on his Latin church burial record lower left to enlarge in a new window or tab.) His mother church burial record lists him as, Joseph de Pirrune 60, which puts his birth to about 1674. Less than three months later, Leonarda died and was buried in the St. Dominici church cemetery on November 17, 1634. (Mouse over and click on her Latin church burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) Her mother church burial record lists her as, Leonarda de Pirrena 50, but she was actually 58 when she died. For now, this is all that is known about them.

Antonino Garretta and his wife Geronima’s ancestries are unknown, but they lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. The reason their ancestries are unknown is because a Sciacca church marriage record or contract entry could not be found for them. They may have been married in either the St. Michele or St. Vito churches, as these marriage and baptism records don’t go back this far. If so, they probably had other children born before the ones found. Another possibility is that they married and had children in another town and then moved to Sciacca.
The documents found are three Sciacca mother church baptism records for the children of Antonino and Geronima Garretta as follows — ancestor Leonarda; Vincenzo who was baptized as Vinc’o on May 15, 1578; and Vita Crispina who was baptized on August 17, 1580, but her mother is listed as Girlorma, which is the Italian spelling of Geronima.
It is not known when Antonino and Geronima died, but he is not listed as being deceased on his daughter ancestor Leonardo’s June 30, 1593, marriage record, so it is assumed he was alive at the time. Because burial records don’t begin until 1606, a search for their burials in the available records is useless. Until more records can be found, this is all that is known about them. |
