Vito Pumilia was born on October 29, 1629, and baptized that same day in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Vincenzo Pumilia and his wife Diana Giuffrida. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism image upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) He was incorrectly listed as being 16 years old on his father’s 1652 Sciacca Rivelo (tax record).
In 1655 church banns were read on March 29th, 30th and April 4th for Vito to marry Accursia Naro. She was also baptized in the mother church parish of Sciacca on February 20, 1634, as Accursia Filippa, the daughter of Natale Naro and his wife Filippa, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism image middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Twenty-five year-old Vito and 21 year-old Accursia were married at the mother church in Sciacca on April 19, 1655. (Mouse over and click on their Latin marriage record image upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)
Nine Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Vito and Accursia Pumilia, sometimes spelled Pomilia as follows — Anna was born on March 22, 1657, and baptized as Anna Gaetana Josepha the next day; Onofrio was born and baptized as Honophrius Vincenzius on December 1, 1658; Anna Francesca Nicolina on December 7, 1660; Anna Maria Catherina on September 22, 1663; Calogero was born on October 8, 1665, and baptized as Calogerus Vincenzo Joseph the next day; Stephana Philippa Vincenza was born and baptized on the evening of December 26, 1668; Rosalia Catherina on August 20, 1671; ancestor Francesco; and Catherina Maria Antonia who was born on January 1, 1676, and was baptized the next day.
Accursia died sometime in the almost 22 month span after her last child was baptized and October 24, 1677, the date church banns were first read for Vito to remarry. Unfortunately, Sciacca burial records for this time period are unavailable for research. Her death is also documented on her son Onofrio’s November 10, 1678, marriage record. Vito, being left with young children, decided to remarry. On October 24th, 28th and 31st, marriage banns were read for Vito to marry Matthia Ficara. About two weeks later, on November 14, 1677, Vito and Matthia were married at the St. Vito church in Sciacca. (Mouse over and click on their Latin marriage record image lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) No children’s baptisms have been found for this couple.
It is documented that Vito was still alive when his son ancestor Francesco was first married in 1701. It is also documented on ancestor Francesco’s 1714 Rivelo (tax record), that his father was deceased. Vito died at home and was buried in the mother church cemetery on January 28, 1708. (Mouse over and click on his Latin burial record image lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His mother church burial record lists him as Master Vitus Pumilia alias Panno about 80, but he was actually 78 when he died. It is not known if his second wife remarried or when she died. For now, this isall that is known about them.

Vincenzo Pumilia was baptized as Vin’co Marcello on January 16, 1606, in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Giuseppe Pumilia and his wife Crispina, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism image upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)
On some of his children’s baptism records he is called Maestro, (Master) which is a term of respect honoring his talent in his guild profession.
On July 4th, 11th and 18th of 1627, church banns were read for Vincenzo to marry Diana Giuffrida. She was named after her paternal grandmother and baptized as Andriana Ger’a on September 30, 1612, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Caterina Garofalo and her husband Vito Giuffrida. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism image middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Adriana was apparently known as Diana, as all her other records list her as that. It should be noted that on her baptism record her surname is spelled the Latin way, Juffrida but on her marriage record it is spelled the Italian way, Giufrida. Twenty-one and a half Vincenzo and almost 15 year-old Diana were married in the Sciacca mother church on August 1, 1627. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)
Eight Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Vincenzo and Diana Pumilia as follows —Crispina Pellegrina, named after her paternal grandmother, was born on the morning of August 18, 1628, and baptized later that same day; ancestor Vito was named after his maternal grandfather; Elisabetta Margarita was born and baptized on November 19, 1632; Vita Joanna, named after her maternal grandmother, was born on the evening of July 29, 1634, and baptized the next day; Domenico was born and baptized as Domnicuis Gaspar on February 6, 1638, and in 1662, married Vincenza Guardino, the daughter of ancestors Giovanna Caradonna and Antonino Guardino; Margarita Spina was born on August 24, 1640, and baptized the next day; Apollonina Dominica was born and baptized on February 10, 1643, but died 20 months later on November 9, 1644; and Giovanni, who was born and baptized as Joannes Domincius on April 26, 1644.
There is a 1652 Sciacca Rivelo (tax record) that seems to be for this family, but the ages are not correct. (Mouse over and click on her 1652 Rivelo image lower right to enlarge in a new window or tab.) It lists ancestor Vincenzo as 38, but he was actually 46 at the time. His wife Diana is listed next without an age. Then their four children are listed as follows — ancestor Vito is listed as 16, but he was 23; Dominico Gaspare is listed as 11 year old Gasper, but he was 14; Giovanni Dominico was listed as 7 year old Dominico, but he was actually 8 at the time; and Margarita, being female, is listed without an age. Their 3 other daughters were old enough at this time to already have been married. Their isn’t much written on this Rivelo, so it doesn’t look like they owned much taxable property.
It is not known whenVincenzo and Diana died, but he was deceased and she was alive when their son ancestor Vito was married on April 19, 1655. He died sometime in the 3 year span after the Rivelo was recorded on May 9, 1652, and before his son’s marriage in 1655. It is also documented that Diana was still alive when her son Domenico married on May 2, 1662. Unfortunately a Sciacca burial record for either of them has not been found yet, so for now, this is all that is known about them. |

Natale Naro was baptized as Natali Ant’no on December 25, 1606, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Accursia Caronna and her husband Nicolò Naro. (Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism image upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His father died when he was only six years old.
Sometime before or in 1631, Natale married a woman named Filippa, whose surname is unknown, as a Sciacca marriage contract or church marriage record could not be found for them. Seven Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Natali and Pha de Naro as follows — Leonardo Francesco was born and baptized on March 13, 1632, but died at 2 years old on October 11, 1634; ancestor Accursia was named after her paternal grandmother; another Leonardo was born on the morning of July 10, 1637, and baptized as Leonardo Antonino Joseph that same day; Vincenzo was born on March 11, 1641, and baptized as Vincenzo Alessandro the next day; Antonia was born on the evening of January 20, 1642, and baptized as Antonia Hyeronma the next day; Vita Caterina was born and baptized on January 14, 1645, and grew up to marry in 1670, Nicolò Filippo, the son of ancestor Vito Sutera and his second wife Rosalia Galluzzo; and Giuseppe, who was born on December 19, 1655, and was baptized the next day as Joseph Gaetanus.
It is documented that Natale and Filippa were alive when their daughter ancestor Accursia was married on April 19, 1655, and deceased by September 15, 1670, when their daughter Vita was married. Natale died and was buried in the mother church cemetery on July 9, 1662. (Mouse over and click on his Latin burial record image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His mother church burial record lists him as Natali de Naro about 60, but he was only 55 when he died. Filippa lived another seven years and was buried on November 17, 1669, in the church of St. Francesco cemetery outside the city. Her mother church burial record lists her as Philippa wife of the deceased Natalis Naro about 56 years old. (Mouse over and click on her Latin burial record image lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) This puts her birth to about 1613, but it is not certain. For now, this is all that is known about them.

Giuseppe Pumilia and his wife Crispina’s ancestries are unknown, but they lived and raised a family in the St Michele parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. A Sciacca marriage contract or church marriage record could not be found for them. They probably married about 1587 in the St. Michele church, but this churches marriage records don’t go back this far.
Ten St. Michele baptism records have been found for the children of Joseppi and Spina Pumilia, but one has an incorrect mother’s name on it. They are as follows —Biaggio was baptized as Blasi Vinc’o on September 11, 1588, and he married Antonina Petrano on April 20, 1625; Caterina was baptized on January 12, 1592; Vincenza was baptized as Vincenzia Joana on December 27, 1594; Filippo Jacobo on May 1, 1596; Vito was baptized as Vitu Vic’u on October 29, 1599; Leonarda Caterina was baptized on January 7, 1603, and in 1619, she married Geronimo Ragusa, the son of ancestors Calogera Quartararo and Petro Ragusa; Margarita was baptized as Blasia Margarita on August 5, 1604, with her mother listed as Antonina, and she married Francisco, the son of ancestors Calogero and Aloysia Bellitto on February 17, 1624; ancestor Vincenzo; Francesco was baptized as Fran’co Ger’o on March 14, 1610; and Diego who was baptized on November 11, 1613, but died at 8 years old on October 1, 1622.
It is documented that Giuseppe was deceased when his daughter Leonarda was married on January 19, 1619. Giuseppe died and was buried in the St. Maria di Lillo cemetery on January 24, 1618. (Mouse over and click on his Latin burial record image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His very brief St. Michele burial record lists his name and burial ground, no age is listed. Crispina lived another 6 more years. She died at home on March 30, 1624, and was buried in the same cemetery as her husband on the last day. (Mouse over and click on her Latin burial record image right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)Her St. Michele burial record lists her as being 50, which puts her birth to about 1574. Unfortunately, this is all that known about them.

Vito Giuffrida was baptized as Vito Mario on September 8, 1591, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Andriana Maniscalco and Bartolo Giuffrida.(Mouse over and click on his Latin baptism image upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) He is also the younger brother to ancestors Costanza and Benigna Giuffrida. On all of his records he is listed as Maestro, which indicates he was highly respected in his guild profession, and his surname is listed with the Latin spelling of Juffrida.
On April 1st, 8th and 25th, church banns were read for Vito to marry Caterina Garofalo. She was baptized on November 9, 1593, in the St. Michele parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Giuseppe Garofalo and his wife Leonarda, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism image middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) On May 16, 1610, eighteen year-old Vito married sixteen year-old Caterina at the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) On Vito and Caterina’s marriage record, which is very hard to read, her father is listed as Joseppi Garafalo, but a mother is not listed. On November 11, 1611, almost a year and a half after they married, Sciacca notary Calogero Maniscalco filed a notarial marriage contract for Vito Giuffrida and Caterina Garofalo. (Mouse over and click on their hand written marriage contract index image lower middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)This contract is also documented in Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico Volume Primo, which is easier to read. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image middle left to enlarge in a new window/tab.)
Eleven mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Master Vito and Catharina Juffrida or Giuffrida as follows — Paola was baptized on February 7, 1611, but died 6 days later on the 13th; ancestor Diana was named after her paternal grandmother; Giovanni was baptized on June 12, 1615, but died the next day; Vincenzo on October 24, 1618, who died at 2 months old on January 4, 1619; another Vincenzo, who was born and baptized as Vinc’zo Angelus on August 2, 1620; Bartolo was born and baptized as Bartholomus Joseph after both of his grandfathers on October 21, 1622; Agatha Paula was born and baptized on February 5, 1625; Giuseppe was born on the morning of August 17, 1627, and baptized later that same day as Joseph, after his maternal grandfather; Angela Francesca was born and baptized on November 10, 1631; and another Giovanni who was baptized by the midwife because of imminent danger of death. There was also another possible daughter, Leonarda, named after her maternal grandmother, whose baptism record has not been found, but a burial record has been found. She died on May 27, 1622, at six years old, putting her birth to about 1616, which fits into the other children’s birth dates. It should be noted that there was another couple named Vito Giuffrida and Caterina Giambruno who were married in 1603 in the Sciacca St. Michele church, and had children during this same time. This can cause confusion between the two families as the mother’s maiden names are not listed on baptism records. The only difference between these two families is that on ancestor Vito’s children records, except for Francesco Gaspare’s baptism record and Leonarda’s burial record, the father is listed as Maestro, either on the baptism or burial record. Because Francesco Gaspare was baptized in the mother church parish, Leonarda was named after her grandmother, and the fact that their birth dates fit into this family, it is assumed they are the children of these ancestors. On the others couple’s children’s records, none have the Maestro title for the father and they all were baptized in the St. Michele parish.
Vito died and was buried in the St. Augustino convent cemetery outside the city on August 18 1656. (Mouse over and click on his burial record image lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) What is unusual about his burial record, is that it is listed without a month, but it is located after July 28th and before September 2nd, so it is assumed he died in August. His mother church burial record lists him as Maestro Vitus Giuffrida about 60. Almost 13 years later, on July 11, 1669, Caterina died and was buried in the convent church of St. Dominico outside the city. (Mouse over and click on her Latin burial record lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Her mother church burial record lists her as Catharina wife of Maestro Viti Juffrida about 75 years old, which was her correct age. For now, this is all that is known about them.

Nicolò Naro was baptized as Cola on October 30, 1583, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy, the son of Domenica Nicotra and her husband Nunzio Naro. (Mouse over and click on his baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.)
On November 21, 1605, Sciacca notary Vincenzo Gallo filed a notarial marriage contract for Nicolò and Accursia Caronna. She was baptized as Cursa Franc’a on June 8, 1583, also in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the only known child of Antonino Caronna and his wife Geronima, whose surname is unknown. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism image middle right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Cola and Accursia, both twenty-two years old, were married on January 8, 1606, in the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin church marriage record image upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Only one other Sciacca baptism record has been found, besides ancestor Natale, for the children of Cola and Cursa di Naro. A daughter named Filippa, who was baptized in the mother church parish on April 2, 1611.
The only fact known about Accursia’s parents is that her father Antonino died and was buried in the mother church cemetery on June 24, 1607. (Mouse over and click on his Latin burial image lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His one line mother church burial record list him simply as Ant’no Caronna, died, buried in Matrice. Nicolò died and was buried in the mother church cemetery on July 5, 1613. (Mouse over and click on his Latin burial record image lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Like his father-in-law, his burial record is just one line, Cola di Naro buried in Matrice. It is not known when Accursia or her mother died, so this is all that is known about them.

Giuseppe Garofalo’s ancestry is uncertain, but he lived and raised a family in Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. There is a Sciacca mother church baptism record dated June 10, 1553, for a Giuseppe Antonino, son of Pellegrino Garofalo, that may be for this ancestor, but there is no supporting documentation to confirm it. (Mouse over and click on his possible baptism record image upper right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) The uncertainty arises because none of his sons were named Pellegrino.
On January 6, 1576, Sciacca notary Geronimo Agostino filed a notarial marriage contract for Giuseppe to marry Leonarda Currao. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image upper left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) She was baptized as Narducza on December 11, 1559, in the mother church parish of Sciacca, the daughter of Pietro Currao and his unnamed wife, who may be named Isabella. (Mouse over and click on her Latin baptism image lower right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) A Sciacca church marriage record could not be found for Giuseppe and Leonarda, as records after July 23, 1575, to January 12, 1576, are missing from the file. They probably married during this period.
There are eight Sciacca baptism records that have a father listed as Giuseppe Garofalo, but they spell his name several different ways — Joseppi, Joseph with a surname sometimes spelled Galafaro and sometimes he is called Mastro (Master). The mother’s name listed on these baptism records is either Leonarda, Nardula or Narda. The eight baptism records include four from the mother church —the first three and seventh child and the other four from the St. Michele parish records. The St. Michele records are hard to read, but between the index and register records most can be deciphered. Their children's baptisms are as follows — Vincenzo Calogero was baptized on November 23, 1576, and married Filippa Garrano in 1602; Vituza Francesca was baptized on June 15, 1579, and married Bastiano Donzelli on August 20, 1599; Julia on March 16, 1581; Calogera Crispina on March 20, 1587; Petro Calogero, named after his maternal grandfather, was baptized on September 23, 1589, and married Virginia Rocca in 1619; ancestor Caterina; Barbara Angelica on August 19, 1596; and Antonino Matteo on December 15, 1598.
It is documented that Giuseppe was alive when his daughter ancestor Caterina married on May 16, 1610, and deceased when his son Pietro married on February 12, 1619. Giuseppe died and was buried in the convent of St. Dominico cemetery on May 2, 1613. (Mouse over and click on his Latin burial record image lower left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) His very brief mother church burial record lists him as Mastro Giuseppe Garofalo buried in St. Dominico cemetery.
In both volumes of Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico, there are three entries for Leonarda Garofalo. They are all about a sale of five houses to Francisco Morrione. They are dated August 12th and 30th of 1614. The last one reads. “Sale of five buildings of houses in Rabato, near the houses of Don Calogero Buscemi by Leonarda Garofalo, to Francisca Morrione” and goes on to say what looks like the money went to the benefit of St. Anastasia and St. Andrea, that are both part of the greater church. If this is ancestor Leonarda, than she died sometime after August of 1614. For now this is all that’s known about them. |
~<^>~ |
Nunzio Naro’s ancestry is unknown, but he married and lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy.
On September 13, 1579, Sciacca notary Giovanni Vella filed a notarial marriage contract for Nunzio to marry Domenica Nicotra. (Mouse over and click on their marriage contract entry image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) She was the daughter of Giovanni Nicotra and his wife, who may have been named Antonella. A Sciacca baptism record could not be found for Domenica. On September 14, 1579, the day after the marriage contract was filed, Nunzio and Domenica were married at the Sciacca mother church. (Mouse over and click on their Latin marriage record image right to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Other than ancestor Nicolò , there was only one Sciacca baptism record found for the children of Nunzio and Minica di Naro. A daughter named Antonella was baptized in the mother church parish on December 1, 1580, possibly named after her maternal grandmother.
Unfortunately, nothing else is known about Nunzio and Domenica. |
~< Back to Chart >~ |
Pietro Currao and his wife Isabella’s ancestries are unknown. It is documented that Pietro was the father of ancestor Leonarda, but Isabella may not be her mother, as ancestor Leonarda didn’t name a daughter Isabella. What is documented is that Pietro and Isabella lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. They would have married earlier than the available church records, so a church record can not be found for them. A Sciacca marriage contract could not be found for them either.
Six Sciacca mother church baptism records have been found for the children of Petro Currao, but only the last chid has Isabella listed as the mother, so she may not be the mother of the first five children. The six baptism records are as follows — Margarita was baptized on July 5, 1557, but probably died young; ancestor Leonarda; Consola Calogera on April 13, 1562; another Margarita was baptized on February 18, 1565; Vincenzo Antonino on December 5, 1568; and Accursio, who was baptized as Curso, on March 15, 1573, after his father’s death.
Pietro died sometime before his last child was baptized, which means he died either in the second half of 1572 or early 1573. Unfortunately, burial records are not available for research this far back. It is not known when Isabella died, so, for now, this is all that is known about them. |
~<^>~ |
Giovanni Nicotra and his wife Antonella’s ancestries are unknown. It is documented that Giovanni was an ancestor, but Antonella may not be, but his daughter, ancestor Domenica, did name a daughter Antonella. What is documented is that Giovanni and Antonella lived and raised a family in the mother church parish of Sciacca, Agrigento, Sicilia, Italy. They may have moved to Sciacca about 1577, as their daughter ancestor Domenica had to have been born before 1567, but she may have had another mother. Only two Sciacca baptism records have been found for the children of Joani and Antonella di Nicotra, both in the mother church parish of Sciacca as follows — Vincenzo was baptized on September 18, 1577; and Betta, probably short for Elisabetta, who was baptized on September 4, 1578. This seems to indicate that they married and had several children in another town, then moved to Sciacca and had their last two children there.
There are two interesting entries in both volumes of Pellegrino Mortillaro’s book, Andrea Randazzo un notaio storico, which is a translation into Italian of Sciacca notary records, which were written in Latin. The first one is in volume 1, and it’s an inventory of property entry for Giovanni Nicotra, dated September 9, 1586. (Mouse over and click on the inventory entry image left to enlarge in a new window/tab.) Because his surname is somewhat rare in Sciacca, this could be for ancestor Giovanni. Inventories usually occurred soon after a persons death. The other one is in volume 2 and is dated July 3, 1611, which reads, Testamento d'Antonella Nicotra, meaning she is having her will recorded. Sciacca burial records are available for research from 1606, so the inventory entry can not be confirmed with a burial. A Sciacca burial record for a few years after 1611, has not been found for Antonella. If either or both of these are for the ancestors is not certain, but the dates fit. Until more documentation can be found, this is all that is known about them.
